Follow Adventures of a Former Foreign Service Officer in Frederic Mabbatt’s New Book

coverMabbatt

Dog Ear Publishing releases “On the Front Lines of the Cold War: The Adventures of an American Foreign Service Family” by Frederic Mabbatt.

A retired senior Foreign Service officer shares stories of his adventures during the Cold War – sometimes funny, sometimes dangerous – in the service of his country in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

After spending more than 20 years as a Foreign Service officer, Frederic Mabbatt has seen it all. In this new book, “Tony,” as he’s known to his family and friends, relays some of the experiences he and his young family had during their time abroad. From escaping an enraged mob during riots in the Sudan to enjoying the samba in Rio and visiting the lush gardens of Bali, Mabbatt experienced joy, fear and satisfaction in his career during the era of Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union.

“On the Front Lines of the Cold War: The Adventures of an American Foreign Service Family” tells of Mabbatt’s work with public affairs programs designed to promote democracy and a free market economy as positive alternatives to Communism. He and his wife, Jean, were married and got on the road right away so Tony could be sworn in as a Foreign Service information officer in Washington, D.C. While waiting for his first posting, he and the staff rally in the wake of President Kennedy’s assassination, reinforcing his enthusiasm for the job. His family is with him from the start, as Jean and 5-week-old Patricia accompany him to Khartoum in the Sudan.

This engrossing look at Foreign Service protocol and the unforgettable events that took place during Mabbatt’s service includes tips for visiting Muslim countries and descriptions of building goodwill to the United States in countries that viewed Americans in a favorable light. This insider’s look at the Foreign Service and postings around the world paints a clear picture of the importance of representing democracy at its best. A special supplement provides Mabbatt’s opinions on contemporary foreign policies.

Author Frederic Mabbatt, who once served in Jordan, the Sudan, Brazil, Tanzania, Indonesia and the Netherlands, now lives with his wife, Jean, in Sun Valley, where he lectures and writes about foreign policy issues. Mabbatt served in the Marine Corps and worked for the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau and the San Diego Zoo before joining the Foreign Service in 1963. He studied at the University of Alaska and is a graduate of the University of San Diego and studied international relations at San Diego State University.

coverMorgan

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Why the Long Face? A Story About Thumb Sucking” by Dr. Todd Morgan.

A board-certified expert with his own dental practice describes the all-too-real consequences of thumb-sucking on a child’s health and development in this new picture book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Although thumb sucking can be a soothing activity for babies and young children, its effects are anything but soothing to the body. In fact, thumb sucking can affect craniofacial growth and development of airways, hindering functions such as breathing, speaking and swallowing. This new book by a dentist details the effects of thumb sucking on growing children to help parents recognize early symptoms so they can avoid problems with their child’s health.

“Why the Long Face? A Story About Thumb Sucking” stars Gracie, a smart girl who knows a lot of things but not the problems that sucking a thumb can create. Gracie isn’t worried that her constant thumb sucking makes her smile crooked or might make her face long. After all, her pony Alice has a long face and looks beautiful. When she visits her dentist, Dr. Morgan, Gracie and her parents find out how much damage a thumb can create, including making it harder to breathe at night. A fateful dream changes Gracie’s mind about the pleasure of sucking her thumb. Colorful watercolor illustrations by Manny Aguiler and a list of helpful organizations and websites round out this resource for any parent with a thumb-sucking child.

Author Todd Morgan, an internationally recognized expert in dental sleep medicine, has a practice in Encinitas, Calif. He graduated from the Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis in 1985. New Novel by Susan Rosvall Provides Thoughtful Look at Vietnam Experience

coverRosvall

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Silence is Broken” by Susan S. Rosvall.

A young man’s military ordeal is detailed in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. After a temporary withdrawal from college, William Scofield is drafted into a 1st Infantry artillery unit in Vietnam; decades pass before he breaks his silence, revealing the shocking story of his 1966 tour of duty.

Author Susan S. Rosvall taps into her brother’s personal Vietnam experience to create the character of Private William Scofield, who stars in this new book.  A naïve young man from a middle-class Southern California family, Bill is unprepared for the brutalities that await him in the III Corps battle zone of Vietnam.

In the relentless heat of Vietnam, Bill confronts both an internal and an external enemy.  Assigned to a seven-man howitzer crew, he meets the hateful Sergeant Moore, an illiterate Klansman from Alabama, who makes it his business to bring Bill down.  In spite of Moore’s insidious threats, and the bone-chilling attacks of North Vietnamese soldiers in the field, Bill performs with courage and self-reliance.  Unwittingly, he emerges a hero

Meanwhile, Bill’s mother, Abigail, fears that her son will be physically or psychologically damaged by the war, or that he won’t return at all.  Desperately, she searches for information about the politics and progress of the war, hoping to stay emotionally connected to Bill.

“Silence is Broken” is a heartbreakingly realistic portrayal of a young man who becomes an instrument of destruction for an ill-defined cause.  Forever changed, Scofield could be any boy sent to war and forced to act in a manner that goes entirely against his nature.  In the end, his childlike trust of national leaders — and human nature itself — evolves into a mature cynicism.

This is the first novel for author Susan S. Rosvall, whose painstaking research is evident on every page. Rosvall, an English composition teacher at California State University, Los Angeles, lives in San Marino, Calif.

Soldier’s 150-Year-Old letters Share Civil War Stories; Dennette McDermott Releases New Book

coverMcDermott

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Civil War Letters of Dwight J. Brewer in Facsimile” by Dennette McDermott.

A descendant of a Civil War infrantryman presents some of the letters he wrote, sharing part of her family’s history in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Imagine receiving an unforgettable glimpse into the past. That’s just what happened when author Dennette McDermott was given letters from her great-great-grandfather Dwight J. Brewer, born in 1842 in New York, who served with the 20th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War. In this new book McDermott shares some of those letters, which were kept in their original envelopes for 150 years.

“The Civil War Letters of Dwight J. Brewer in Facsimile” relays the stories of brave men in Company F who traveled from Fredericksburg to New Port News to Vicksburg to Cumberland and Knoxville. Their travails – and triumphs – come to light through letters Brewer wrote to his family as well as entries from his diary. Brewer, whose family moved to Michigan when he was a boy, enlisted as a private in Company F of the Michigan 20th Infantry  — made up of 12 companies — on Aug. 9, 1862. He was discharged May 24, 1865, in Knoxville, Tenn.

From battlefield experiences to descriptions of camp life, readers can view scanned copies of the letters themselves, putting a face on the realities of the Civil War. After the war, Brewer would go on to buy 80 acres of farmland in Clare, Mich., serve as town clerk in 1870, justice of the peace in 1872 and treasurer in 1874. He and his wife, Carrie, had three children and helped found the Clare Congregational Church of Christ. Although Brewer survived the war, his desire to help others would prove to be his downfall: He died in 1881 of a head injury he received while helping a neighbor build a barn.

Author Dennette McDermott is professor of flue and coordinator of graduate studies in music at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. She received music degrees at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Music performance has taken her to countries around the world, and she enjoys Czech music and publishing 18th century music manuscripts.

Heather White Driscoll Details Young Girl’s First Serious Relationship in New Book

coverDriscoll

Dog Ear Publishing releases “He Calls Me Harp” by Heather White Driscoll.

In this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing, 14-year-old Harper Whitmore is eager to establish her place in the wider world of high school, and she’s not in a hurry to start a relationship. Enter Scott Pierce, a handsome basketball star who sets his sights on Harper as soon as he meets her; the two embark on a tumultuous relationship that spans years, with ups and downs related to his past and her future.

Harper Whitmore, who stars in this new novel, walked into high school feeling confident about finding her niche. Though she was on the small side, she was attractive and her skill on the soccer field ensured her place in the freshman class. Fate had a different plan when it threw her into the path of senior Scott Pierce, star of the basketball team whose reputation with girls is of the “love ’em and leave ’em” variety. Immediately intrigued by Harper’s sass and confidence, Scott begins to pursue her in earnest. Initially thrilled by the attention, Harper finds herself falling for Scott, but soon the reality of their age difference — as well as the shocking nature of Scott’s past — begins to tear the two apart.

Scott desperately insists he’s changed his ways, and he’s never loved any girl the way he loves Harper. Harper wants to believe him, but girls from his past continue to pop up and derail their progress. Additionally, Scott’s teammate, freshman Barrett, is wildly jealous of their relationship, claiming Scott only became interested in Harper after Barrett expressed a desire to get to know her better. Can the two manage to overcome the many obstacles in their path and make their relationship work? Will Scott’s sordid past create an insurmountable barrier to happiness? “He Calls Me Harp” is a riveting tale of first love in all its glory; Harper and Scott are three-dimensional characters just as flawed as any other human. Their ability to work past their flaws makes the story move.

This is the first novel for author Heather White Driscoll, a Washington native who relocated to the East Coast to attend the University of Massachusetts-Boston. There, Driscoll earned a dual degree in American literature and American studies. She lives in Boston with her husband and their dog, and she works as a financial analyst and a spin instructor.

New Book by Speech Pathologist Gives A Voice to People with Communication Issues

coverDepperschmidt

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Tip of Your Tongue: A Speech Therapist’s Tribute to the Power of Communication Lost and Found” by Kathleen Depperschmidt.

A speech pathologist shares insights and experiences from 13 people who struggle with communicating – as well as their own feelings about the problem, whether it’s present from birth or a life-changing event like injury — in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Lacking the power to communicate can have a devastating effect on people and their relationship to the world – and people – around them. In her new book, a speech-pathologist describes the experiences of 13 people who have problems with communication, sharing both her work and their feelings about the situation. Having a name or a word on the tip of one’s tongue is frustrating, but these real-life situations go beyond that simple human foible and highlight the power of the gift of communication and the emotional and practical impact when it is lost.

“The Tip of Your Tongue: A Speech Therapist’s Tribute to the Power of Communication Lost and Found” details both the mechanics of therapy – respiration, phonation and articulation — and the emotional process of working toward improved communication. The book offers simple guidelines for talking with someone who has trouble forming or thinking of words, such as being patient and asking to hear the information again. From stuttering to physical conditions such as cleft palate or Parkinson’s Disease to injuries from accidents or strokes, the slightest problem can affect the miraculous ability of brain, vocal chords and tongue to work together.

Some of the author’s subjects regain their ability while others face lifelong impairment. All find ways to cope, from ensuring the street where they live is “pronounceable” to wearing hearing aids and keeping a sense of humor in stressful situations. Even as she sheds light on the sometimes-misunderstood problem of poor communication, the author urges anyone not affected to treasure their ability to talk to and understand the world.

This is the second book for author Kathleen Depperschmidt, a speech-language pathologist who serves home health care agencies and private clients. During her 18-year career she also has served in schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Depperschmidt has a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Fort Hays (Kan.) State University, where she also received a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Her previous book is “The Birdhouse Project: A Woman’s Journey through Grief, and she is writing two other nonfiction books. To thank her interview subjects, Depperschmidt will donate 25 percent of all profits from “The Tip of Your Tongue” to two charities: the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Women Helping Women, based in Salina, Kan.

New Historical Novel by David Huntley Captivating Tale of Post WWII Espionage

coverHuntley

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Death Watch Beetle” by David E. Huntley.

This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing is a thriller set during the Cold War, featuring a young man who finds himself deep in trouble when he accidentally finds a secret message hidden in a hymnal.  Donald Harvey travels internationally as he seeks to determine the meaning behind an encryption that could put his life and the lives of those he knows and loves in danger.

Donald Harvey is happily occupied as an employee at Trandect Engineering Ltd. in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England. Donald, the star of this new novel, entertains himself with his sweetheart, a young Polish immigrant named Alijca, and he skirts the edges of danger with a lucrative black market business. His idyll, however, comes to a sharp halt when Donald unwittingly involves himself in international espionage. Some misplaced apple juice uncovers invisible ink on a stray piece of paper in a hymnal, and Donald quite naturally becomes curious. The strange series of letters is clearly a code, and Donald takes it to a cryptographer friend.

The cryptographer, Roger, is intrigued, and takes it to his contacts at MI6. The agency and their American counterparts in the Air Force brief Donald, and they bring him into their plans to apprehend a Nazi war criminal responsible for the death of thousands, as well as heading up Hitler’s super weapons projects.

Can Donald uphold his end of the task and bring the notorious criminal to justice? Can he maintain his life as he does it, including his burgeoning romance with the beautiful Alijca, who has her own history of suffering at the hands of Russian and Nazi occupation forces?

“Death Watch Beetle” is an engaging story, creating an authentic narrative. Filled with action, adventure and romance, author David Huntley’s novel becomes an intriguing puzzle for amateur cryptographers and fiction fans alike. Huntley, a survivor of the London Blitz in WWII, now a semi-retired international businessman, lives in Texas with his French wife, Sophie, herself a survivor of Nazi occupation. Huntley has tremendous respect and admiration for the soldiers and sailors of the U.S. and Allied Armed Forces who “helped save Europe from tyranny,”  and has dedicated this book to WWII veterans. Many of their names & service are recorded for posterity in the books’ final pages.

New Children’s Book by Diana Pastora Carson Tells Story of Father of Disability Rights

coverDPCarson

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Ed Roberts: Father of Disability Rights” by Diana Pastora Carson.

A teacher and disability rights advocate describes the life and achievements of disability civil rights leader, Ed Roberts,in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Ed Roberts was an active boy who loved playing football and baseball at the park across from his house. But in 1953, everything changed: He contracted polio and couldn’t even breathe on his own, much less walk or run. This new children’s book profiles the courageous young quadriplegic, who would go on to fight for his own rights and the rights of all people with disabilities – a legacy that continues today.

“Ed Roberts: Father of Disability Rights” delves into Roberts’ life, detailing his early days in an iron lung and learning his lessons via the phone, battling school officials about high school graduation and becoming the first person with significant disabilities to attend the University of California at Berkley. Inspired by the civil rights and liberation movements, Roberts fought for equality for people with disabilities. As director of California’s Department of Rehabilitation and sit-ins in San Francisco, he helped bring change that let people live more independent lives, paving the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws promoting equal access. The World Institute on Disability, which Roberts co-founded, helps people around the world.

An illustration symbolism guide details the meanings of symbol-rich drawings by Patrick Wm. Connally. The symbols — unique to Roberts and the disability civil rights movement – portray information via their colorful graphics. For instance, the boy peeking out of the drawing on Page 23 represents Roberts’ son. Readers are invited to find other symbols in the book as well.

Author Diana Pastora Carson, who has a master’s degree in education, is an elementary teacher,  disability rights advocate and a consultant and speaker who specializes in inclusion and diversity as it relates to disability. Her inspiration is the experiences of her brother, who grew up being misjudged and excluded. Carson has taught disability studies courses through the San Diego State University Foundation and served on the board of directors for Disability Rights California. Her other books include “Foundations for Ability Awareness” and “Ability Awareness in Action: Teaching Ability Awareness to Children and Youth.”

In addition to his art, illustrator Patrick Wm. Connally is a civil rights advocate, consultant on access and disability rights, a family caregiver and co-host and producer of a radio program featuring disability issues. He is founder and president of Disability Rights Enforcement Education Services and has served on government and nonprofit boards and committees such as Disability Rights California, World Institute on Disability, and Research and Training Center on Personal Assistance Services. His artwork has helped raise money for animal rescue projects and promoted world-class museum events.

John LaRizzio Releases New Book Celebrating Nature’s Hold on Humanity

coverLaRizzio

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Silhouettes and Seasons: Essays and Images of a Personal Nature” by John LaRizzio

In a series of essays and black and white photographs in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing, a former corporate engineer shares his experience of soul searching in relation to the natural world.

Writing allows people to express themselves, sharing their innermost contemplations both mundane and extraordinary. In this new collection of essays and poems, author John LaRizzio shares the deep connection he feels to nature and his years of searching to uncover his inner self. He describes his work as the “unprompted prose of a plain man’s contemplation” and urges others to explore their own spiritual and philosophical tendencies.

In “Silhouettes and Seasons: Essays and Images of a Personal Nature,” chronological notations provide a context and authenticity to the thoughts and emotions expressed. His writing ranges from comparing a lonely commute home from work to the journey of life, to a poem lamenting the last eve of October or an essay about a search for his faithful (and necessary) eyeglasses. Despite their seeming disparity, LaRizzio stays true to his vision, offering what he calls “an open view of a seeker’s heart along the path toward authentic self-expression.”

Flowers show off their petals and trees line a lonely wooded path in the striking black and white photographs LaRizzio took that accompany the book, adding their own voices to his message of nature’s connection to inner selves. As he writes, his essays and poems “display the ruminations of a mind in soulful contemplation, complexities of thought that lead (him) to connect the world without to the one that dwells within.”

Author John LaRizzio spent 35 years in the corporate world before pursuing other things such as writing and nature photography. LaRizzio, a graduate of Penn State University, is a former project engineer, engineering manager and director of engineering for a major U.S. company. Although nature has had a large role in his life since childhood, once he read the works of Henry David Thoreau, LaRizzio’s view of life changed forever.
