John Steinbeck protege reflects on her Broadway and Hollywood days- book by Patricia Wilson

Yesterday’s Mashed Potatoes, the Fabulous Life of a Happy Has-Been, written by Patricia Wilson and published by Dog Ear Publishing, tells the story of a third generation actress from a theatrical family, a child performer who grew up to become a star during Broadway’s “Golden Age” and a respected Hollywood actress. Set against an authentic backdrop of theatrical, TV, and film history, the story spills over with anecdotes of the celebrated: John Steinbeck, who called himself “Patricia Wilson’s understudy,” and first suggested that his young protege write this book;  Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jackie Gleason, Richard Burton, and Carol Burnett, among many others. Of two of her leading men, Bob Fosse and Gene Kelly,  the author writes, “I wasn’t a dancer, and I was too tall for both of them!”
Born in Columbus, Ohio to actor/entertainer parents, Patricia’s sixty-year career includes the Broadway stage, four television series, 200 primetime television episodes, nineteen films, two soap operas, and commercials too numerous to count. Throughout the book there are many wonderful photographs from Patricia’s days in Hollywood and on Broadway.

Infused with humor and touching moments as well, Patricia’s story reads like a novel, a compelling tale of an everywoman’s journey through love, loss, success and sorrow. Yesterday’s Mashed Potatoes, the Fabulous Life of a Happy Has-Been won first place for Excellence in Writing at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference in 2007.

Ghostly Voices Teach Lessons About Golf Using Behavioral Approach- book by Dr. Gerald A. Walford and Gerald E. Walford

Learning to play golf can be tough, but when it’s broken down step by step, even beginners can master the game. Dog Ear Publishing title The Golf Whisperer, written by a member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and a school psychologist, is a behavioral approach to learning the golf swing and game. Authors Dr. Gerald A. Walford and Gerald E. Walford discuss taking small steps to ingrain each step thoroughly in the mind and body before advancing to the next.

The authors take a bold approach in The Golf Whisperer, using three different fonts to represent different characters in the book: a student golfer, the golf whisperer and three “ghosts.” The spirits are the ghost of physics, or biometrics; the ghost of neuro-linguistic programming, which helps control the mind and feelings; and the ghost of psychology, or mental facts. Each has its own voice, guiding the student golfer. Diagrams illustrate the instructions. After you’ve read the book, you’ll be able to hit the links with confidence.

Dr. Gerald A. Walford is a former member of the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association. In 2006, the World Golf Teachers Federation elected him as one of the top 60 teachers. He teaches at StoneCrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, Ky. He received his doctorate in sport psychology and physical education in 1988. While an undergrad at the University of North Dakota, Walford was a scholarship athlete playing Division I hockey and Division II golf.

Gerald E. Walford is a licensed specialist in school psychology for the Hays Consolidated Independent School District in Buda, Texas. He and Dr. Walford also wrote The Golf Superbook and Performance Golf.

Illustrated Family Tale Puts Christ Back Into Christmas- book by Curt Becker

It’s the week before Christmas, and things are definitely not jolly at Santa’s workshop this year. Mrs. Claus finally figures out why: Instead of being excited about the holiday, Santa is sad because people have forgotten about the Christ in Christmas. Working together, Santa, the elves and Mrs. Claus come up with a way to show children about what’s really important about the season.

The Sad Santa, written by Dog Ear Publishing author Curt Becker and filled with beautiful illustrations by Michelle Fariss, reminds us of the real reason for Christmas. Santa was inspired to give presents to children just as the wise men brought presents to Jesus when he was a baby. Indeed, “Jesus was a gift himself, sent straight from God.” It also showcases the meaning of traditional Christmas decorations – such as the star on Christmas trees that is like the star telling of Jesus’ birth. Families will enjoy reading this tale together – and making cookies from the recipe that’s included.

Curt Becker founded Santas for Christ, a nonprofit ministry dedicated to sharing the message of God’s love all year long. His wife, Kerry, is a co-founder and dedicated partner. Becker, who is music director for his church, is retired from the U.S. Air Force and works as a DoD systems engineer.

Michelle Farris, a freelance illustrator, is a recent graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design. She sings in the choir of the church where her father is pastor and Becker is music director.

Journey from Japan to North America Through a Collection of Essays and Stories- book by Namiko Golden

This collection of essays and stories, organized in chronological order, brings to life the experiences of Dog Ear Publishing author Namiko Golden, who was born in Japan just as the country was plunging into World War II. Golden, who grew up in northern Japan, spent a year in high school and two years in graduate school studying in the United States, immersing her in the English language and North American culture. She immigrated to Canada when she married at age 25, living there for more than 30 years. She now lives in Ohio.

The essays in A Crystal Seal cover the events in the author’s life from 1940 to 2008. The intriguing titles range from “Seasons of My Childhood” and “I Chased a Rainbow” to “Sweet Nostalgia” and “Naming My Children.” Various important people in the author’s life are introduced in these essays such as, her junior high school teacher, American mother, friends and family. Photographs are included.

One of the most poignant tales in A Crystal Seal is the essay from which the book takes its title. The Japanese use seals instead of signatures when filling out formal documents. Each family, therefore, has a seal bearing the family name, and some seals are registered to prove they are authentic. When Golden was born, her parents had a crystal seal made bearing her first name, Namiko, to celebrate her birth. This “seal of approval” for the author’s existence became her most prized and unique possession.

True Story Explores What Happens When You Share Your Life with Spirits- book by Judith McCrodden

What would you do if you moved into a haunted house? The author and her family know firsthand what would happen. Spirit Central Awaits Us, a Dog Ear Publishing title, tells the true story of how this single mother, her two children and her in-laws found a new place to live (or did it find them?) in upstate New York and what happened to them both before and after they began living there. Members of the New York Pennsylvania Paranormal Society, the ISIS Paranormal Investigators and a medium named Bonnie Richter confirm that the McCrodden’s home gets frequent visits from Spirits.

Spirit Central Awaits Us also details the many supernatural episodes the author has experienced throughout her life. Whether she’s discussing a move to an attic apartment decorated the way she had described years earlier as a teenager – and living with its spirits – or telling how guardian angels saved her and a friend from a gas explosion at a diner, Ms. McCrodden presents a convincing tale. The author says her home is “inhabited, not haunted,” and living with Spirits is a daily reminder that there is everlasting life which sustains her faith in God and the afterlife.

Spirit Central Awaits Us is a first book for the author, who moved from Queens to provide a better life for her family. Her daughter, Melody, illustrated the cover.

Collection of True Rescue Stories Guaranteed to Get Your Adrenaline Pumping- book by Steve Achelis

In Mountain Responder, When Recreation and Misfortune Collide, Dog Ear Publishing author Steve Achelis, who was commander of Salt Lake County’s Search and Rescue team, writes about his experiences responding to hundreds of emergency calls in the mountains, many of which were featured on the evening news. The rescues recounted in this book range from skiers and hikers who stray from the established path, fallen climbers who wind up dangling on rock walls, to people swept away by fast moving rivers. Battling difficult terrain and challenging weather conditions, Achelis and his teammates get to the scene to help the victims—victims who are frequently suffering from hypothermia and near-fatal traumatic injuries. Sadly, there are occasions when they can’t save the victims and Achelis writes of the soul searching and second-guessing that follow.

Whether digging people out of avalanches, where the snow can be as solid as concrete, or dangling from a thin cable below a helicopter, Achelis and his teammates excel at handling extreme situations. In Mountain Responder, readers have the chance to accompany these backcountry rescuers and experience firsthand the joy and exhilaration that comes from a successful mission. This book will have your adrenaline pumping from the first page when Achelis heads out into the night to save what may be a child who has fallen into the river…or not.
