Sherlock Holmes Takes On JFK Assassination in a New Book by Stephen Ladds

Dog Ear Publishing releases “JFK: 4 Out of 3” by Stephen Ladds.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “JFK: 4 Out of 3” by Stephen Ladds.

A young psychiatrist challenges a patient known only as Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery of the assassination of President Kennedy in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. His theories provide new insights into this modern-day mystery.

A dark and rainy night brings a wheelchair-bound man who refuses to speak to authorities to the Baker Clinic, a former orphanage that now serves those with mental impairments. In this new book, the young psychiatrist caring for the patient, known only as Sherlock Holmes, challenges him to resolve the mysteries of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Was the assassination the result of a conspiracy or the work of a single gunman? Set in 1989, this blend of fact and fiction includes humor and even romance as Holmes provides new deductions related to the historic event that changed a nation.

“JFK: 4 Out of 3” questions the Warren Commission’s report, which concluded Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman, firing three shots: one hit the president’s head, another missed and the third struck both the president and Gov. Connally – a hotly debated conclusion. Abraham Zapruder, a bystander, captured the event with his 8mm home movie camera, and it’s this film and other material that Holmes studies as he attempts to determine what really happened that fateful day. As Holmes begins to deduce new aspects of the assassination, the young psychiatrist grows closer to him and to his bewitching secretary. Will the greatest detective of the 19th century be able to solve the greatest mystery of the 20th century or is he nothing more than another mental patient?

Author Stephen Ladds, who was 6 at the time of the assassination Nov. 22, 1963, became interested in the assassination of John F. Kennedy in high school when a friend showed him a book by Josiah Thompson, “Six Seconds in Dallas,” offering theories on multiple gunmen. Years later, after reading a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about his amazing detective Sherlock Holmes and coincidentally viewing a documentary by Nigel Turner, “The Men Who Killed Kennedy,” Ladds writes that he decided to explore what might happen if Sherlock Holmes turned his brilliant mind to the case. This book, more than two decades in the making, is the result.

Student Shares His Insights on Biblical Revelations in New Book

coverIsola

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Greatest Revelation: Series One” by Abebola Isola.

A West African-born student offers his perspective on the Bible in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Reading the Bible is a personal experience for many people, and sometimes its messages don’t come across clearly. In his new book, author Abebola Isola, a university student, shares the insights he’s gleaned from his own reading of scripture, told in an easy, conversational style that’s easy to follow. He writes that he was inspired to write the book because he wanted to share God’s message with children, teenagers and adults who don’t understand it.

“The Greatest Revelation: Series One” focuses mainly on Bible passages from the Book of Matthew, with each verse followed by a short interpretation. For instance, Isola explores Matthew 4:13: “You are the salt of the earth.” His explanation is the earth needs us or it can’t function, so everyone has responsibilities to God. Regarding Matthew 15:8 — These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. – he explains that Christianity must come from the heart. Instead of talking about Christianity, people need to act and serve God from the bottom of their heart.

Isola humbly presents his interpretation of the Bible, poking fun at himself and some of his initial misconceptions about scripture. For instance, when he was a child, he thought the verses that talk about cutting off part of the body that cause people to sin was literally – that he should cut his body. He later realized, with God’s help, that the scripture referred to metaphorically shedding things that cause people to sin.

Author Abebola Isola, a student at the University of Minnesota, is majoring in economics. Isola was born in Lagos in Nigeria, Africa. His father, an engineer, lives in Nigeria, and his mother, a nurse, lives in America.

New Book by Speech Pathologist Gives A Voice to People with Communication Issues

coverDepperschmidt

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Tip of Your Tongue: A Speech Therapist’s Tribute to the Power of Communication Lost and Found” by Kathleen Depperschmidt.

A speech pathologist shares insights and experiences from 13 people who struggle with communicating – as well as their own feelings about the problem, whether it’s present from birth or a life-changing event like injury — in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Lacking the power to communicate can have a devastating effect on people and their relationship to the world – and people – around them. In her new book, a speech-pathologist describes the experiences of 13 people who have problems with communication, sharing both her work and their feelings about the situation. Having a name or a word on the tip of one’s tongue is frustrating, but these real-life situations go beyond that simple human foible and highlight the power of the gift of communication and the emotional and practical impact when it is lost.

“The Tip of Your Tongue: A Speech Therapist’s Tribute to the Power of Communication Lost and Found” details both the mechanics of therapy – respiration, phonation and articulation — and the emotional process of working toward improved communication. The book offers simple guidelines for talking with someone who has trouble forming or thinking of words, such as being patient and asking to hear the information again. From stuttering to physical conditions such as cleft palate or Parkinson’s Disease to injuries from accidents or strokes, the slightest problem can affect the miraculous ability of brain, vocal chords and tongue to work together.

Some of the author’s subjects regain their ability while others face lifelong impairment. All find ways to cope, from ensuring the street where they live is “pronounceable” to wearing hearing aids and keeping a sense of humor in stressful situations. Even as she sheds light on the sometimes-misunderstood problem of poor communication, the author urges anyone not affected to treasure their ability to talk to and understand the world.

This is the second book for author Kathleen Depperschmidt, a speech-language pathologist who serves home health care agencies and private clients. During her 18-year career she also has served in schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Depperschmidt has a master’s degree in speech-language pathology from Fort Hays (Kan.) State University, where she also received a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Her previous book is “The Birdhouse Project: A Woman’s Journey through Grief, and she is writing two other nonfiction books. To thank her interview subjects, Depperschmidt will donate 25 percent of all profits from “The Tip of Your Tongue” to two charities: the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Women Helping Women, based in Salina, Kan.

Penny Davis shares Heartwarming Stories About Hospice Work in New Book

coverDavisP

Dog Ear Publishing releases “PJ’s, Pearls, and Fishing Poles: Life Lessons of Style and Substance” by Penny Davis.

A former Executive Director of a hospice organization shares stories from her decades-long career and interactions with families, hospice team members and patients in this new book about the importance of time & life lessons released by Dog Ear Publishing.

As a little girl, Penny Davis helped her grandmother care for an ailing neighbor during a hot summer – one of a network of neighborly volunteers who helped care for the gravely ill woman. Although that act took place long before hospice became recognized as a level of care, it inspired Davis, who spent 45 years in health care herself. Her new book explores the world of hospice care, sharing stories from hospice team members, patients and their families as examples of love, wisdom, humor, friendship, resilience, compassion and courage.

“PJ’s, Pearls, and Fishing Poles: Life Lessons of Style and Substance” provides insights into a hospice interdisciplinary team and how it works, meshing the talents of a medical director, nurses, home health aids, chaplain, social workers, bereavement coordinator, volunteer coordinator, volunteers, sales team and executive director. Hospice, which focuses on the patient, offers everything from pain management to emotional support as families navigate quality end-of-life care. The hospice team hears it all, from anxious people who don’t know how to talk to their friends in hospice to requests for egg salad recipes at 3 am and helping patients create gifts for loved ones as a legacy. This heart-warming book celebrates both patients and the special team. It focuses not on death or dying but the heart and soul of living.

Author Penny Davis serves as a board member for the Indiana Hospice Palliative Care Organization and volunteers with a local hospice after retiring as executive director. A portion of proceeds from “PJ’s, Pearls, and Fishing Poles” will be donated to hospice.

Are we ready for Real Leadership? Richard Dillard Releases New Book

coverDillard

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Real Leadership! Are You Ready?” by Richard Dillard.

An award-winning performance solutions executive shares unusual insights about leadership – and how uncommon methods can significantly improve performance – in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

The only constant is change, and that’s certainly true in the business world with market globalization, rapid technology proliferation and the explosion of information. And few would question that the only variables that matter are leadership and operating culture when it comes to thriving in this type of environment. Yet in seeming opposition, real leadership remains elusive and the constructive organizational cultures they produce are few and far between. This new book by a seasoned professional with experience spanning forty-one positions in twenty-three organizations, twelve career fields and seven industries focuses on rethinking and reframing long-held notions of potential and performance, helping kindle the coals of personal transformation and strike the spark of organizational change that is truly remarkable.

“Real Leadership! Are You Ready?” distills knowledge gleaned by Richard Dillard, an expert in leadership development, performance and learning solutions, strategic planning, team building and problem solving, business process re-engineering and customer/vendor relationship management. The first part of the book is designed to simply elevate thinking by the introduction of ideas not normally associated with leadership, while the second part challenges readers to adopt a proven process for developing personal and organizational Leadership Platforms: the Leadership Enrichment LIFE-cycle (LEL-c).

Rather than offering “quick fixes” or instant solutions, Dillard cautions that working through the LEL-c with the help of this book will take commitment, time and hard work. But as he highlights, there is no alternative that “…automatically places you or your organization in a position to leverage your platform and produce remarkable results.”

Richard Dillard is a management consultant for SAIC and collaborates professionally with Human Synergistics International, AchieveGlobal®, Corpus Optima and Direct Measures International. Dillard is certified as a project management professional and has a black belt in Six-Sigma improvement methodology. A U.S. Marine Veteran and current Air Force Reservist, Dillard has both domestic and international experience with successful business turnarounds through organizational and workforce development solutions, earning high marks for his innovative best-shore program design, development and delivery. He and his wife, Stacey, have four daughters and one granddaughter. Dillard is also the author of “CultureIMPACT!™.”
