Jeffrey Morris’ Debut Novel Takes Walk on the Wild Side

Dog Ear Publishing releases “…Won’t Come Home” by Jeffrey Morris

A modern-day nomad scarred by family and drugs works to get sober in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Staying sober – never an easy task – means facing issues he has avoided his whole life.

Jake Preston, a 22-year-old drifter, walking along Route 99 near Fresno in California, hasn’t been home since he took off during spring break of his senior year in high school. Jake, who sports a scraggy beard, greasy blond hair and shabby clothes, stars in this debut novel about a drifter still feeling the effects of his mother’s death seven years earlier, and subsequent arguments with his father, medication, psychiatrists and hospitalization. This coming-of-age tale shadows the ups and downs of Jake’s life as he works to survive the best he knows how.

“…Won’t Come Home,” set in the San Joaquin Valley, Wyoming oilfields and Texas Gulf Coast, offers an inside look at the psyche of a young man living with the double demons of drugs and alcohol, working jobs just to get enough money to survive and get his next fix. When he ends up in a relationship, things become too much to handle, and he hits the road again, lured by the siren call of living only for himself. It’s not easy living this way, and the consequences eventually take their toll. A timely visit from Jake’s sister prevents a desperate act, but can Jake crawl back from the abyss that has become his life and face family issues and responsibilities he has run from his entire life? The conversational style and intricate detail highlight the humanity of this compelling first novel about a man challenged to shoulder his responsibilities and do the right thing.

Author Jeffrey Morris served in the U.S. Navy before studying engineering and then English at Ohio State University. He worked in research and development, as well as in manufacturing, and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English from SUNY Cortland. He left a job with a Colorado utility company so he could spend more time writing. Morris has three children, and he and his second wife, Jean, live in Colorado. He is already working on his second book.

New Historical Novel by David Huntley Captivating Tale of Post WWII Espionage

coverHuntley

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Death Watch Beetle” by David E. Huntley.

This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing is a thriller set during the Cold War, featuring a young man who finds himself deep in trouble when he accidentally finds a secret message hidden in a hymnal.  Donald Harvey travels internationally as he seeks to determine the meaning behind an encryption that could put his life and the lives of those he knows and loves in danger.

Donald Harvey is happily occupied as an employee at Trandect Engineering Ltd. in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England. Donald, the star of this new novel, entertains himself with his sweetheart, a young Polish immigrant named Alijca, and he skirts the edges of danger with a lucrative black market business. His idyll, however, comes to a sharp halt when Donald unwittingly involves himself in international espionage. Some misplaced apple juice uncovers invisible ink on a stray piece of paper in a hymnal, and Donald quite naturally becomes curious. The strange series of letters is clearly a code, and Donald takes it to a cryptographer friend.

The cryptographer, Roger, is intrigued, and takes it to his contacts at MI6. The agency and their American counterparts in the Air Force brief Donald, and they bring him into their plans to apprehend a Nazi war criminal responsible for the death of thousands, as well as heading up Hitler’s super weapons projects.

Can Donald uphold his end of the task and bring the notorious criminal to justice? Can he maintain his life as he does it, including his burgeoning romance with the beautiful Alijca, who has her own history of suffering at the hands of Russian and Nazi occupation forces?

“Death Watch Beetle” is an engaging story, creating an authentic narrative. Filled with action, adventure and romance, author David Huntley’s novel becomes an intriguing puzzle for amateur cryptographers and fiction fans alike. Huntley, a survivor of the London Blitz in WWII, now a semi-retired international businessman, lives in Texas with his French wife, Sophie, herself a survivor of Nazi occupation. Huntley has tremendous respect and admiration for the soldiers and sailors of the U.S. and Allied Armed Forces who “helped save Europe from tyranny,”  and has dedicated this book to WWII veterans. Many of their names & service are recorded for posterity in the books’ final pages.

Ellen Gilman Shares New Memoir with Plenty of Heart

coverGilman

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Mollie’s Tail” To Mollie with Love” by Ellen Gilman.

Saving a 4-year-old sheltie from being euthanized changes a family’s life forever in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

When Sherry Neville (a.k.a. Ellen Gilman) answers a phone call from the family’s veterinarian, she has no idea it will change her life. The vet hopes Sherry will adopt a 4-year-old sheltie whose owners want to euthanize for “not listening.” Although Sherry says no, she stops by the vet’s office anyway to look at the dog. One look at the beautiful black and white dog’s intense gaze has her hooked. This new book, based on real-life events, shares what the family gave Mollie and what she gave them.

“Mollie’s Tail: To Mollie with Love” includes surprises, adventures and anecdotes to warm the heart. It takes Mollie a long time to settle in with the Nevilles even though she seemed to choose them.  They realize her previous owners didn’t treat her right. Eventually Mollie enjoys walks, barking at wildlife and – most of all – spending time with the family simply sitting. As time goes on, Mollie will perform one more feat – opening the Nevilles’ hearts to adopt other shelties. Readers of all ages will be charmed by this tale about an extraordinary dog and her extraordinary family.

Author Ellen Gilman spent 10 years in retail after graduating from the University of Maryland. She and her husband, Steven, have a family-run business that she has helped with for the past 15 years. They have two rescued shelties, Annie and Luke, adopted after Mollie passed away.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Soul on Nice: Esther’s Good-Hearted Adventures in New Zealand and the United States” by Norm Spitzig.

The indomitable waitress who solved a murder mystery at a prestigious golf club returns to star in her own case in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Life is never dull for Esther, Old Bunbury Golf Links & Reading Club’s waitress-extraordinaire, who knows everything that goes on at the club. In this new tale featuring the continuing adventures of Clive and Esther, she is traveling to New Zealand to visit the Kaikoura Whaling & Sailing Club – thanks to the Old Bunbury board of directors as a reward for solving a hideous murder — when she runs into an old enemy. It’s a classic tale of good versus evil as well as a travelogue (complete with photos) and political satire with dashes of humor thrown in for good measure.

“Soul on Nice: Esther’s Good-Hearted Adventures in New Zealand and the United States” features unexpected twists and turns when Hamish, the murderer Esther helped put away, breaks out of jail, leaves a note promising to get revenge on Esther – and nobody knows where he is. With his connections, however, Hamish knows exactly where Esther is and he flies to New Zealand to begin following through with his vile threat. Esther teams up again with Detective Giztips, but when a beloved club member goes missing, she must work on her own. Can her plan succeed or will the dastardly escapee win this potentially deadly round?

This is the fourth book for Author Norm Spitzig, a successful entrepreneur, business consultant and private club governance and operations consultant. Spitzig has written two books under the pseudonym Clive Endive Ogive IV: “Private Clubs in America and around the World” and “Murder and Mayhem at Old Bunbury” as well as the autobiography “How Now, Norm’s Tao,” written under his own name. He and his wife, Cody, live in Florida.

New Fiction Release Madcap Tale of Man’s Experience With an Unconventional Hitman

coverNicholls

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Time Between Raindrops” by Nick Nicholls.

This new fiction release from Dog Ear Publishing is the story of Jim Billings, a man contemplating suicide after the dissolution of his marriage.   Depressed, despondent, and tired of living, Jim hires Ben, a hitman with an agenda of his own.  Jim’s day takes a turn that he doesn’t expect, and he starts to wonder if his life is as finished as he thought it was.

As this new book from author Nick Nicholls begins,  Jim Billings is attempting to figure out the best way to end his life.  He considers and dismisses the usual options, even trying to leap to his death from a high building.  Jim’s plummet to the ground is stopped by his friend Gary, who offers him “another option”.   This option comes in the form of Ben, a disheveled man who makes Jim an offer he can’t refuse:  Ben will assist Jim with his suicide.

After some discussion, Jim empties his savings account and puts his life into Ben’s hands.  Their adventure begins in Anchorage , Alaska, where they meet a pilot with a prop plane waiting to take them into the Alaskan bush.  As time passes, Jim finds himself more engaged with life than he’s been in years, and rather than looking forward to his death, he begins to second-guess his decision to hire Ben.  Will Jim be able to carry out his original plan, or will his old life come to an end in a manner different than he ever imagined?

Time Between Raindrops is a compelling story of a man’s decision to turn away from death to embrace life.  Jim’s metamorphasis from a man battling debilitating depression to a man with a thirst for living makes for a fascinating read.  Author Nick Nicholls is a Pacific Northwest native currently residing in Arizona, where he’s working on his next novel.
