Dog Ear Publishing releases “…Won’t Come Home” by Jeffrey Morris

A modern-day nomad scarred by family and drugs works to get sober in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Staying sober – never an easy task – means facing issues he has avoided his whole life.

Jake Preston, a 22-year-old drifter, walking along Route 99 near Fresno in California, hasn’t been home since he took off during spring break of his senior year in high school. Jake, who sports a scraggy beard, greasy blond hair and shabby clothes, stars in this debut novel about a drifter still feeling the effects of his mother’s death seven years earlier, and subsequent arguments with his father, medication, psychiatrists and hospitalization. This coming-of-age tale shadows the ups and downs of Jake’s life as he works to survive the best he knows how.

“…Won’t Come Home,” set in the San Joaquin Valley, Wyoming oilfields and Texas Gulf Coast, offers an inside look at the psyche of a young man living with the double demons of drugs and alcohol, working jobs just to get enough money to survive and get his next fix. When he ends up in a relationship, things become too much to handle, and he hits the road again, lured by the siren call of living only for himself. It’s not easy living this way, and the consequences eventually take their toll. A timely visit from Jake’s sister prevents a desperate act, but can Jake crawl back from the abyss that has become his life and face family issues and responsibilities he has run from his entire life? The conversational style and intricate detail highlight the humanity of this compelling first novel about a man challenged to shoulder his responsibilities and do the right thing.

Author Jeffrey Morris served in the U.S. Navy before studying engineering and then English at Ohio State University. He worked in research and development, as well as in manufacturing, and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English from SUNY Cortland. He left a job with a Colorado utility company so he could spend more time writing. Morris has three children, and he and his second wife, Jean, live in Colorado. He is already working on his second book.

coverTierney

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Academic Affairs: A Love Story” by William G. Tierney.

There’s much more than academics going on at Smithfield University in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. The author, a university professor, creates a sexy, intriguing, and poignant campus world populated by passionate characters who make love, make mistakes and make millions.

For the bored professor with a roving eye, the striving student with a secret, the all-powerful president and the humble gardener, campus life is a daily drama full of twisted relationships, pleasure, passion and pain. And sometimes, lessons learned. Set at the fictional Smithfield University in California “Academic Affairs: A Love Story,”  weaves a narrative both tender and turbulent, examining all variations of relationships in this loosely bound academic family: sociology professor Bill Massy’s clandestine affair with the brilliant and powerful provost; President Roger Turner’s strange partnership with the eccentric mogul who donates $250 million; and graduate student Jim Hagedorn, who jeopardizes his love affair with Kevin for casual sexual encounters. As these too-human characters struggle to make sense of their lives and their work, some relationships end and new ones start, thanks to luck and the lure of love.

New Children’s Book by Diana Pastora Carson Tells Story of Father of Disability Rights

coverDPCarson

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Ed Roberts: Father of Disability Rights” by Diana Pastora Carson.

A teacher and disability rights advocate describes the life and achievements of disability civil rights leader, Ed Roberts,in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Ed Roberts was an active boy who loved playing football and baseball at the park across from his house. But in 1953, everything changed: He contracted polio and couldn’t even breathe on his own, much less walk or run. This new children’s book profiles the courageous young quadriplegic, who would go on to fight for his own rights and the rights of all people with disabilities – a legacy that continues today.

“Ed Roberts: Father of Disability Rights” delves into Roberts’ life, detailing his early days in an iron lung and learning his lessons via the phone, battling school officials about high school graduation and becoming the first person with significant disabilities to attend the University of California at Berkley. Inspired by the civil rights and liberation movements, Roberts fought for equality for people with disabilities. As director of California’s Department of Rehabilitation and sit-ins in San Francisco, he helped bring change that let people live more independent lives, paving the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws promoting equal access. The World Institute on Disability, which Roberts co-founded, helps people around the world.

An illustration symbolism guide details the meanings of symbol-rich drawings by Patrick Wm. Connally. The symbols — unique to Roberts and the disability civil rights movement – portray information via their colorful graphics. For instance, the boy peeking out of the drawing on Page 23 represents Roberts’ son. Readers are invited to find other symbols in the book as well.

Author Diana Pastora Carson, who has a master’s degree in education, is an elementary teacher,  disability rights advocate and a consultant and speaker who specializes in inclusion and diversity as it relates to disability. Her inspiration is the experiences of her brother, who grew up being misjudged and excluded. Carson has taught disability studies courses through the San Diego State University Foundation and served on the board of directors for Disability Rights California. Her other books include “Foundations for Ability Awareness” and “Ability Awareness in Action: Teaching Ability Awareness to Children and Youth.”

In addition to his art, illustrator Patrick Wm. Connally is a civil rights advocate, consultant on access and disability rights, a family caregiver and co-host and producer of a radio program featuring disability issues. He is founder and president of Disability Rights Enforcement Education Services and has served on government and nonprofit boards and committees such as Disability Rights California, World Institute on Disability, and Research and Training Center on Personal Assistance Services. His artwork has helped raise money for animal rescue projects and promoted world-class museum events.

New Fiction Release by Avery Mann Action-Packed Thriller of Witches and Unlikely Terrorists Set in a Coastal Village of Marin County and Salzburg, Austria

coverJaniganMann

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Angel Landing” by Avery Mann.

This new novel published by Dog Ear Publishing is the story of Angel Landing, a composite Marin coastal community whose newest resident is a retired government agent, Mark Jamison. Seeking respite from his health and marital problems, Mark quickly finds himself embroiled in adventures that threaten everything he has come to accept in his life and career.

Mark Jamison is a former government agent and think tank director, seeking a change in climate to deal with his breathing issues. Angel Landing, a beautiful coastal community in California, seems to be the ideal location for his health and relaxation, and it provides the distance he needs to reassess his longtime marriage to his wife, Sarah. As this new novel reveals, however, this cozy town is anything but restful, and Mark is quickly pulled back into intrigue.

Mark’s neighbors are, to say the least, unusual, and his natural curiosity overcomes his need for relaxation; soon, Mark is targeted by a sect of Wiccans seeking a method of reproduction that does not require the use of males. In the middle of this adventure, the government reenlists its old agent to investigate nuclear devices that they fear might have passed through the Golden Gate. Mark’s nose for trouble lands himself and Sarah into life-threatening danger, and Mark fears this might be his last exploit after all. Will Mark be able to reach his contact to inform her of the potential nuclear crisis? Will it be the final end of male dominance or mutually assured destruction of all? Can Mark and Sarah escape to save themselves and the planet?

“Angel Landing” is a riveting yarn filled with adventure, intrigue, and romance, and a lot of original thinking about some the biggest issues facing the world. Mark Jamison is a man whose inquisitive nature lands him into trouble, and Mark’s propensity for trouble will keep readers wanting more.

Author Avery Mann’s lifelong experience as a think tank director, diplomat and advisor to the government provides him with ample fodder for his fiction work, part of his new series of Mark Jamison adventures.

New Book by Sophie Britten Offers Tales of Pioneer Life in California

“Historic photos scattered throughout the book enhance this richly detailed narrative.”

“Historic photos scattered throughout the book enhance this richly detailed narrative.”

The discovery of several boxes of newspaper clippings in this new book inspires a third-generation California native to write the history of the region. This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing features historic photos and detailed descriptions of the land and its people over a 100-year span.

Rolling, wooded hills next to high mountains that fed rivers and the chance for a fresh start lured pioneers to Three Rivers in the 1850s. Drawing on her own family’s history, in this new book author Sophie Britten presents a picture of their daily life as well as shedding light on those who followed, detailing 100 years of the area’s history. Family lore shares equal billing with history in this intriguing look at pioneers in California.

“Pioneers in Paradise: A Historical and Biographical Record of Early Days in Three Rivers, California 1850s to 1950s” covers a lot of ground, literally. In the first section, Britten describes the apple and pear orchards of Three Rivers and cemeteries, as well as community events, services and organizations, natural hazards, schools, and early business ventures like the broom handle factory, fish hatchery and saloon. Britten brings history alive with her detailed descriptions of daily life, including a mention of when Three Rivers was a “hot spot” for motion pictures. Between 1925 and 1929, she writes, a number of films were made there and in nearby parks.

The second section features stories about specific families, told in chronological order. The stories reveal hard-working people and colorful characters, including Mary Holben Trauger, the first white woman to stay in the Mineral King Mining District through an entire winter in the 1870s and a former playmate of William McKinley, future president of the United States. Mary, who helped her husband find the buried and wounded during a snow slide, became known as Mineral King’s “Angel” for that work and for caring for ill or injured silver miners. Historic photos scattered throughout the book enhance this richly detailed narrative.

Author Sophie Britten, a retired rancher, is the third generation of her family to live in Three Rivers and the nearby foothills and mountains. Her family has done cattle ranching, stock packing and citrus farming in the area. Britten, who has published manuscripts, wrote the book after discovering boxes filled with newspaper clippings from area papers. She already is planning another book on the Loverin family and one on an early visitor to the Kaweah canyons.
