In the first tale, Frieda the fox notices that the people in town do not get along. When a watery disaster threatens the town, she wonders if everyone can work together to save their home. In the second story, Frieda must help a friend whose curiosity about a mysterious box in the woods gets him into trouble.

The easy-flowing rhymes make reading aloud fun as the stories unfold.  Charming illustrations by Marty Petersen enhance this treat for the eyes and ears. Residents of Grand Lake often see her walking down Main Street.

New Fiction Release is the Tale of a Woman’s Mystical and Spiritual Journey and the Positive Aftermath; Book by C.L. Rasero

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Hidden, The Crystal Myth” by C.L. Rasero.

This new fiction release published by Dog Ear Publishing delves deep into the changes brought about when a woman happens upon an artifact that will change her life and the lives around her.  For some people, these changes are positive, but for those who refuse to embrace them, they might be less than positive.

Christa is a single mother trying to raise her son, Matt, a brilliant boy diagnosed with Asperger’s at a young age.  A creative woman, Christa has been working diligently on a novel that revolves around the origin of humans as it connects to the continued sightings of UFOs and alien abduction of humans.  The book seems to flow out of Christa with little effort, and she enjoys the process.  One evening, Christa and her dear friend, Molly, go looking for crystals, and they come upon a type of crystal that neither woman has ever encountered; they are beautiful and intriguing, and Molly decides to take them back to her lab to investigate them further.

That night, Christa has unusual dreams, dreams that are reminiscent of recorded alien abduction experiences.  This makes Molly’s inspection of the crystals more urgent, but her surreptitious use of the laboratory equipment does not go unnoticed.  Cal Renner, Molly’s co-worker and Christa’s disgruntled ex-boyfriend takes it upon himself to learn what Molly has discovered.  Renner’s interference creates problems beyond  Christa and Molly’s wildest imaginations as he brings a governmental agency into the lab to continue experimenting on the extremely unusual crystals.  This agency makes life incredibly difficult for Molly, and Christa fears for her friend even as she embraces the messages the crystals continue to deliver to her.  Can Christa place her trust in the positive revelations of the crystals?  Can Molly evade the governmental agencies and their intrusion into her life?  Are these crystals all they seem to be?

The Hidden, The Crystal Myth is a fascinating tale, filled with positive spiritual disclosures as well as the aspects of a pulse-pounding thriller.  Author C.L. Rasero effortlessly blends the mystic with the more traditional mystery, leaving the readers on the edge of their seats as they marvel at the manner in which the forces at work guide the characters to their ultimate destiny.

New Release Tracks Woman’s Journey on Appalachian Trail; Book by Marit Janse

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Lulu’s Trail” by Marit Janse.

Woman documents her experiences on the adventure of a lifetime in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Description and black and white photos showcase the highs and lows the author faces on the Appalachian Trail.

When her 24-year marriage began to crumble, Marit Janse decided to take drastic action and do something that would change her life: Hike the entire Appalachian Trail. She hoped her husband would beg her not to go on this dangerous trip, but he did not. This new book details her six-month journey on the 2,174 miles of the trail, which snakes from Georgia to Maine through 14 states. Marit soon finds out that walking the trail is more than a simple walk in the woods and documents her thoughts through words and a series of photos.

As “Lulu’s Trail” begins, Marit outfits herself for the hike, more concerned with the color of her sleeping bag and cute accessories than thinking about practical matters. Her son and a close family friend plan to hike the first five days with her and return home. Right away the trail is harder than anyone thought, and her son lasts only one night. Instead of groups of talking, laughing hikers, Marit finds herself with one or two people along the way. Although the trail produces hardship, she finds inspiration in others who are making the journey and small acts of kindness from others: the mention of a bathroom just ahead, a warm hostel or simple advice that aids survival.

“Lulu,” as Marit becomes known on the trail, survives many obstacles during her hike, including an inner ear infection that affects her balance, mice that nibble food through her pockets, rain and snow, bad water, bears and immovable boulders. The trail’s negatives are offset by such things as “trail angels” – children with a church that helps hikers every weekend, offering water bottle refills, fruit or a candy bar to walkers of the Appalachian Trail. Lulu’s experiences, including the final leg of her hike near Mount Katahdin, provide an unforgettable lesson in the power of determination.

Author Marit Janse, who lives in Michigan, was born and raised in Schiedam, The Netherlands. She was inspired to walk the trail after reading Bill Bryson’s book “A Walk in the Woods.” Janse has a son, Gary.

New Release from Optometrist Opens Eyes to Keeping Vision Clear; Book by Dr. Vince Zingaro

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Discovering the Eye: A Guide to Understanding Your Vision” by Dr. Vince Zingaro.

A practicing optometrist details signs of symptoms of poor eye health – as well as potential treatment — in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

If the eyes are the window to the soul, what happens when they begin to fail? An optometrist who has seen thousands of patients answers questions about vision-related issues in this informative new book. Dr. Vince Zingaro provides information about preventing eye disease and explores options for vision correction, including what health of the eyes can reveal about health of the body. It’s important to have healthy eyes and clear vision because, as Zingaro writes early in the book, “How we perceive the world around us is almost entirely tied to our vision.”

“Discover the Eye: A Guide to Understanding Your Vision” covers such topics as the eye’s anatomy, macular degeneration, cataracts, signs of glaucoma, how diabetes and high blood pressure affect eyes, and the promises – and limits – of LASIK and other vision correction choices. The book, although written for laymen, offers enough information for readers to understand how their eyes work so they can make more informed decisions with their doctors. Zingaro takes any mystery out of symptoms of eye disease, how conditions are diagnosed and potential options to treat them. A few illustrations diagramming the eye and a glossary of helpful terms round out this comprehensive resource for anyone concerned about vision and eye health.

This is the first book for author Vince Zingaro, who has practiced optometry since 2007. He has belonged to the American Optometric Association and Pennsylvania Optometric Association, and he has managed eye diseases and pre-and post-operation patients since 2006. He earned a degree in biology from West Chester University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in visual science  as well as a doctorate in optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He is in private practice in Pennsylvania.

New Fiction Release Provides Unflinching Look At Extremely Sensitive Topic; Book by Michael Ward

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Stinger is in the Tail” by Michael Ward.

This new fiction release published by Dog Ear Publishing takes a hard, graphic look at the topic of child molestation, specifically, the molestation of young boys.  Set during the Depression until the end of the war years, this is the tale of a young boy and the manner that sexual abuse shaped his character and formed his outlook on life.

Seven-year-old Mikey O’Farrell is a bright, normal boy, who loves to accompany his mother to her job as cashier at a local movie theater.  Watching movies while his mother works, he encounters child molesters who use his innocence to commit lewd acts on him.  At home, he is further abused by his mother’s boyfriend, a sadistic thug who abuses Mikey, and his mother, both physically and sexually.  Sadly, there are other incidents, including a violent rape at age ten by his parish priest.  The abuses create a highly sexualized boy who associates sex acts with love and acceptance.

As Mikey enters his teens, he finds himself driven by obsessive sex acts, not only with adult strangers but his peers and two younger brothers, who have their own issues with abuse.  Wracked with guilt inspired by his religious beliefs, and his desire for a heterosexual life, he finds his addiction to sexual acting out impossible to curb, continually drawn to abusers.   At the end of WWII, at age sixteen, Mikey enlists fraudulently in the army, with a forged birth certificate, where he hopes to get his life on track, and see the world.

The Stinger is in the Tail is a heart-wrenching portrayal of the sexual crimes heaped on Mikey, and the manner in which the boy adapted to the abuse.  At times, the novel is graphic in language and sexual aspects, but it is always compelling, demanding that the reader understand the true face of molestation and the horrific effects it has on the lives of the victims.

Author Michael Ward is a California resident who has written for TV and is recently retired from a career in painting and teaching art.  This is Ward’s first published novel.  He has already completed  Books II and III, to complete the trilogy and he hopes they will be available soon to those who want to see where Mikey’s life journey takes him.

New Nonfiction Release Relives Author’s Past, Both Bitter and Sweet ; Book byThomas J. Miranda

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Bedside Reader: Tales of Growing Up, Living, and Dying” by Thomas J. Miranda.

This new nonfiction release published by Dog Ear Publishing shares one man’s experiences in “the good old days” as well as those in the more recent past.  Set in the lush landscape of Hawaii, ‘Grandpa Bigdog’, or GBD as he is known in these pages, makes the past come alive for readers, whether they’re young or old.

Author Thomas J. Miranda is not impressed with the direction in which the country seems to be heading, and he’s not afraid to share his opinions.  The stories Miranda has compiled in this collection are meant to entertain as well as educate, to generate laughter even as it turns the wheels of thought in each reader’s head.  Miranda’s youth was spent in Hawaii, and then he moved with his family to Campbell, California, where he continued to have adventure after adventure, with a cast of characters as vivid as a Hawaiian sunset.

Miranda’s early career as a chemist and scientist is also filled with stories that are, in turn, instructive and hilarious, and his love for his work shines through.  However, GBD’s greatest love was his wife, Carol, or GmBD (Grandma Bigdog).  His love for her, and their love for their faith are a sterling example of the institution of marriage, and they provide their friends and loved ones with something to aspire to.

Bedside Reader: Tales of Growing Up, Living, and Dying is an accessible read, with tales that are relatable to every reader, no matter his or her walk of life.  Author Thomas J. Miranda is a native of Hawaii, and he has been an active member of the Polymer Chemistry and Coatings Technology field for over four decades.  This is his second book, and he has published more than fifty papers and book chapters, and he has authored thirteen U.S. patents.

Tiny People Show Big Hearts in New Release; Book by Linda Anderson

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Let’s Meet the Glickens” by Linda Anderson.

A group of tiny people finds a new sanctuary with a man and wife on their farm in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Enter the fascinating world of the Gickens, who grow to only 12 inches tall and live in the woods. In this enchanting new story, Mac, a Gicken, first encounters a man named Casey while trying to find wild berries to eat. Casey was about to cut down an oak tree for firewood. Unfortunately, that’s where some of Mac’s friends live. At first, communication is a problem because nobody can understand each other. Luckily, Caseys’ wife, Mary Jo, figures out that the Gickens speak English backwards, and everyone learns how to get along.

“Let’s Meet the Gickens” follows the growing relationship between the humans and the Gickens, who need a place for their new colony. Casey and Mary Jo come to their rescue, offering some of their own land that already features food sources the Gickens need: berry bushes, wild flowers and herbs. The humans enjoy showing the Gickens new wonders like flashlights, dryers and their pet dogs. Casey and Mary Jo’s generosity allows the Gickens to reunite with other families. The Gickens reward that generosity with their friendliness and dandelion tea, which helps Casey’s health. A celebratory family picnic brings a very special surprise that will change lives forever.

Author Linda Anderson, who has written and told stories for many years, credits her love of the craft to Peg Marshall, a former teacher in a one-room schoolhouse who made learning fun for Linda. Anderson, a former preschool teacher and daycare director, lives on a small farm with her husband and a spoiled Jack Russell terrier. She grew up with two older brothers in Lander, Pa., and raised four children of her own.
