David R. Branon Weaves Assassinations, Secrets into New Thriller

coverBranon

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Spider’s Web” by David R. Branon

Everyone has secrets to keep when four Supreme Court justices get assassinated. Murder, intrigue and plot twists take center stage in this captivating and humorous thriller released by Dog Ear Publishing.

The assassination of four Supreme Court justices thanks to wine spiked with poison sets off a chain reaction of events that sparks the investigative curiosity of FBI Special Agent Ridge Walker Trueheart, an Oglala Sioux Indian who has never forgotten what happened to his ancestors. Murder, conspiracies and unforgettably colorful characters come together in this new, tongue-in-cheek thriller by a former CEO. The closer Trueheart gets to the truth, the more those around him work to throw him off the scent.

“The Spider’s Web” raises the eyebrows right from the start when the book opens with a daring hit. Trueheart eventually runs across an unlikely suspect, Annabelle “Happy” Holiday, who is country mouse clever but eventually falls victim to avaricious city rats and a judicial system that supports eminent domain. Every character in the book has a secret to keep, from the president and vice president of the United States to the directors of the CIA and the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, as well as a vicious Mafia don. Enter the lovely – and ruthless — Dakota Kilgore, whose true purpose is a mystery.

Ultra-rich “patriots” dedicated to keeping the country safe and power in their pockets – even if it means violating the very principles upon which the nation was founded – add to the twists and turns of the book as it spins on to its surprising conclusion.

This is the second novel for author David Branon, who also wrote the well-received “The Curmudgeon’s Tree.” Branon served as chief executive officer of a business that was folded into a worldwide sporting goods conglomerate, becoming chairman of the multimillion-dollar Americas operation before deciding to retire to pursue the passion of words rather than the sterility of bottom-line numbers. The magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University lives with his wife in Greenville, South Carolina.

Heaven’s Power Reveals Itself in New Thriller by Pat and Chris Hoffman

coverHoffman

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Fury of the Fifth Angel” by Pat and Chris Hoffman.

Nights skies reveal something is on its way that could affect the entire world, but nobody is talking about it in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Two authors turn their experiences with electricity into a thriller of epic proportions.

When well-respected astronomer Ben Cohen confirms his suspicions about an impending meteorite storm, even the president of the United States sits up and takes notice. That storm, which will have a catastrophic effect on the world, begins its work quietly at first, but eventually people start to notice, including electric power grid control operator John Halloran working in upstate New York. This new thriller draws on the authors’ insider knowledge of electricity, meshing technical know-how with a realistic story about the human instinct to survive.

In “Fury of the Fifth Angel,” the president must make tough decisions about how to handle the threat of the storm. His task is made more difficult thanks to Rev. Randall Davis, a believer in signs who follows his heart and a heavenly authority who begins talking about end times. As John works to puzzle out what is happening to the power grid, he has help from a new acquaintance, Devon Grant of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As the government moves in to cover up the severity of what the celestial sightings mean, John will need all of his instincts to prove what’s going on and what to do about this news that could signal the end of the world.

“The authors will open many eyes to both how a power system operates and the vulnerabilities of these systems,” writes O-T-S owner Mike Terbrueggen in the book’s forward.” “This is the first book I have ever read that combines a complex technical field (power systems), deep personal relationships, political intrigue, and old-time religion into one fast-paced story.” In a second forward, Edward Rhoads, an astrophysicist lecturer at Indianapolis University Purdue University in Indianapolis warns of the real-life dangers of objects from space. “It is not a matter of if but when, where, and how much damage. The events portrayed in this book will occur someday,” he writes, adding that readers need to choose leaders who will invest in equipment to detect space objects on a path to Earth.

Father-son writing team Albert James “Pat” Hoffman and Chris Hoffman both worked in the electric utility industry as well as visiting and working for many electric companies and organizations. Pat, now retired, lives with his wife in upstate New York during the summer and central Florida in the winter. Chris lives in central Indiana with his wife and four children. They already are working on a sequel to “Fury of the Fifth Angel.”

coverHuntley

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Death Watch Beetle” by David E. Huntley.

This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing is a thriller set during the Cold War, featuring a young man who finds himself deep in trouble when he accidentally finds a secret message hidden in a hymnal.  Donald Harvey travels internationally as he seeks to determine the meaning behind an encryption that could put his life and the lives of those he knows and loves in danger.

Donald Harvey is happily occupied as an employee at Trandect Engineering Ltd. in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England. Donald, the star of this new novel, entertains himself with his sweetheart, a young Polish immigrant named Alijca, and he skirts the edges of danger with a lucrative black market business. His idyll, however, comes to a sharp halt when Donald unwittingly involves himself in international espionage. Some misplaced apple juice uncovers invisible ink on a stray piece of paper in a hymnal, and Donald quite naturally becomes curious. The strange series of letters is clearly a code, and Donald takes it to a cryptographer friend.

The cryptographer, Roger, is intrigued, and takes it to his contacts at MI6. The agency and their American counterparts in the Air Force brief Donald, and they bring him into their plans to apprehend a Nazi war criminal responsible for the death of thousands, as well as heading up Hitler’s super weapons projects.

Can Donald uphold his end of the task and bring the notorious criminal to justice? Can he maintain his life as he does it, including his burgeoning romance with the beautiful Alijca, who has her own history of suffering at the hands of Russian and Nazi occupation forces?

“Death Watch Beetle” is an engaging story, creating an authentic narrative. Filled with action, adventure and romance, author David Huntley’s novel becomes an intriguing puzzle for amateur cryptographers and fiction fans alike. Huntley, a survivor of the London Blitz in WWII, now a semi-retired international businessman, lives in Texas with his French wife, Sophie, herself a survivor of Nazi occupation. Huntley has tremendous respect and admiration for the soldiers and sailors of the U.S. and Allied Armed Forces who “helped save Europe from tyranny,”  and has dedicated this book to WWII veterans. Many of their names & service are recorded for posterity in the books’ final pages.

Detective Lieutenant Ed Slate returns in new thriller “Spot of Blood.”

coverShaffer

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Spot of Blood” by Dale F. Shaffer.

Author Dale F. Shaffer reprises his popular police detective in this hard-hitting crime novel inspired by an actual homicide, and released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Lieutenant Ed Slate heads the new Major Crimes Section in Chicago PD, and is happily married with two children. Slate and his partner, Joe Barona, catch a case at Northwestern University where a female medical student has gone missing, leaving only a spot of blood as a clue to her disappearance. This is the type of case that fuels Slate’s passion for justice. Three suspects are developed: a janitor who is convicted sex offender; a recent law school graduate who dated the missing female as an undergraduate; a fellow medical student who has dated the missing woman.

The case gets even more complex when one suspect, after being interviewed, turns up in Bangkok. Then, another suspect turns up dead. As the investigation deepens, Slate’s home life is threatened when he is stalked by someone with a grudge.

Author Dale F. Shaffer’s depth of police experience brings authenticity to his writing. He served as an Ohio state trooper and chief of police in Ohio and Illinois, earned a degree in police administration, and graduated from the FBI National Academy.

Kirkus Indie of Kirkus Media, a national review service, has this to say about “Spot of Blood”:

Shaffer sketches the wide-ranging investigation in exacting detail, right down to the paperwork, and paints a true-to-life picture of what law enforcement really entails: days that start with coffee and a Danish; pressure from higher-ups to balance hot cases with lessinteresting ones; stretches of unfruitful legwork punctuated by violence; and commiseration with colleagues about when to retire. … A fine Chicago procedural that proves its worth in day-to-day grit.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Hollow Man” by Paul Hollis

This new fiction release published by Dog Ear Publishing tells the story of a young analyst from a U.S. governmental agency who is attempting to avoid the conflict in Vietnam by studying emerging terror tactics in Europe. Although he avoids war, he finds himself in a great deal of danger as he attempts to divert a terrorist plot that might destroy Europe’s economy.

Dog Ear Publishing is proud to announce the release of “The Hollow Man,” the story of a young American field analyst sent by his government agency to study terror tactics. This nameless agent is desperate to stay out of Vietnam, where American men are dying daily, but he is deeply embroiled in a deadly cross-continental chase as he attempts to foil Chaban, a mastermind assassin who hopes to explode the European economy and many innocent citizens as well.

The analyst’s agency has cut him loose, and his own conscience (as well as the haunting memory of one of Chaban’s previous victims) keeps him on the murder’s trail. The only help the young man has comes from Zita, a young M16 agent as well as the analyst’s longtime friend and lover. Zita’s tendency to be in the right place at the right time saves the analyst more than once, and the cat-and-mouse game he’s playing with the evil Chaban becomes more dangerous with the passing of every moment. Can the analyst derail the determined terrorist, or will the continent of Europe and its people suffer at Chaban’s hands? “The Hollow Man” is a fast-paced thrill ride, filled with twists and turns as the analyst and Zita attempt to save a significant portion of the Earth’s population.

Author Paul Hollis, a traveler at heart, uses the experience he gained during the nine years of living abroad teaching companies about potential global implications to create a vivid portrait of 1970s Europe. This is the first book in the Hollow Man series.

New Fiction Release Supernatural Thriller of Deception and Mystery; Book by Fredrick S. dela Cruz

coverCruz

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Returning Blaze: Through Flesh and Bone” by Fredrick S. dela Cruz.

As you read the first sentence of the novel, you know that the world is askew, because the sky “shimmers beautifully light green, completely enveloping the earth in an unnatural hue.” But can the one to set the world aright be a man lost in grief, alcohol, and bitter seclusion? A man withered away by the untimely death of his wife and little boy?

“Returning Blaze: Through Flesh and Bone” delivers riveting mystery and one gripping revelation after another. First, the story unfolds as two FBI agents struggle to solve a series of gruesome murders. Their only clues are the strange symbols tattooed on the victims’ wrists and a tiny blood-red pearl-like object lodged in their ears. The victims, drained of blood, are the aftermath of a supernatural being that seeks a rare, unique blood in order to augment its own innate power.

Then, there is the unnamed hero, the man isolated from the world by his grief. “The hero is nameless for a length of time in the story,” author Fredrick S. dela Cruz explains, “in order to build a mystique around the character. The reader wonders, who is he? What are his origins? What is he?” He is tormented by dreams and flashbacks of memories long forgotten, memories of a past in which he knows he did not live, and eras in history of which he could not have been part. How could they be his memories? Gradually, he begins to wield abilities that no other human has, and the symbol found on the victims’ wrists is the same one mysteriously materializing on his own wrist.

Next, you see an enigmatic hooded man as the master puppeteer, wielding deception. On one hand, he orchestrates the offences of the bloodthirsty being. But on the other, he draws out the hero from seclusion, manipulating and forcing him to try to stop the murders. Moreover, he executes a scheme to annihilate cities around the globe. Even so, he must vanquish his own personal demons.

Lastly, an entity, with the form like a black smoke of death, makes its bargains with humans and manipulates them to their destruction. Having the ability to traverse time and space, it eventually traps the nameless hero in an inescapable deception, preventing him from saving the world.

Author Fredrick S. dela Cruz brings the captivating plot lines gracefully together into a thrilling ending you could not have foreseen. The novel is a product of his love for writing since his early teens. Of Filipino and Norwegian descent, he has lived in Southern California since his childhood.
