Follow Adventures of a Former Foreign Service Officer in Frederic Mabbatt’s New Book

coverMabbatt

Dog Ear Publishing releases “On the Front Lines of the Cold War: The Adventures of an American Foreign Service Family” by Frederic Mabbatt.

A retired senior Foreign Service officer shares stories of his adventures during the Cold War – sometimes funny, sometimes dangerous – in the service of his country in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

After spending more than 20 years as a Foreign Service officer, Frederic Mabbatt has seen it all. In this new book, “Tony,” as he’s known to his family and friends, relays some of the experiences he and his young family had during their time abroad. From escaping an enraged mob during riots in the Sudan to enjoying the samba in Rio and visiting the lush gardens of Bali, Mabbatt experienced joy, fear and satisfaction in his career during the era of Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union.

“On the Front Lines of the Cold War: The Adventures of an American Foreign Service Family” tells of Mabbatt’s work with public affairs programs designed to promote democracy and a free market economy as positive alternatives to Communism. He and his wife, Jean, were married and got on the road right away so Tony could be sworn in as a Foreign Service information officer in Washington, D.C. While waiting for his first posting, he and the staff rally in the wake of President Kennedy’s assassination, reinforcing his enthusiasm for the job. His family is with him from the start, as Jean and 5-week-old Patricia accompany him to Khartoum in the Sudan.

This engrossing look at Foreign Service protocol and the unforgettable events that took place during Mabbatt’s service includes tips for visiting Muslim countries and descriptions of building goodwill to the United States in countries that viewed Americans in a favorable light. This insider’s look at the Foreign Service and postings around the world paints a clear picture of the importance of representing democracy at its best. A special supplement provides Mabbatt’s opinions on contemporary foreign policies.

Author Frederic Mabbatt, who once served in Jordan, the Sudan, Brazil, Tanzania, Indonesia and the Netherlands, now lives with his wife, Jean, in Sun Valley, where he lectures and writes about foreign policy issues. Mabbatt served in the Marine Corps and worked for the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau and the San Diego Zoo before joining the Foreign Service in 1963. He studied at the University of Alaska and is a graduate of the University of San Diego and studied international relations at San Diego State University.

Penny Davis shares Heartwarming Stories About Hospice Work in New Book

coverDavisP

Dog Ear Publishing releases “PJ’s, Pearls, and Fishing Poles: Life Lessons of Style and Substance” by Penny Davis.

A former Executive Director of a hospice organization shares stories from her decades-long career and interactions with families, hospice team members and patients in this new book about the importance of time & life lessons released by Dog Ear Publishing.

As a little girl, Penny Davis helped her grandmother care for an ailing neighbor during a hot summer – one of a network of neighborly volunteers who helped care for the gravely ill woman. Although that act took place long before hospice became recognized as a level of care, it inspired Davis, who spent 45 years in health care herself. Her new book explores the world of hospice care, sharing stories from hospice team members, patients and their families as examples of love, wisdom, humor, friendship, resilience, compassion and courage.

“PJ’s, Pearls, and Fishing Poles: Life Lessons of Style and Substance” provides insights into a hospice interdisciplinary team and how it works, meshing the talents of a medical director, nurses, home health aids, chaplain, social workers, bereavement coordinator, volunteer coordinator, volunteers, sales team and executive director. Hospice, which focuses on the patient, offers everything from pain management to emotional support as families navigate quality end-of-life care. The hospice team hears it all, from anxious people who don’t know how to talk to their friends in hospice to requests for egg salad recipes at 3 am and helping patients create gifts for loved ones as a legacy. This heart-warming book celebrates both patients and the special team. It focuses not on death or dying but the heart and soul of living.

Author Penny Davis serves as a board member for the Indiana Hospice Palliative Care Organization and volunteers with a local hospice after retiring as executive director. A portion of proceeds from “PJ’s, Pearls, and Fishing Poles” will be donated to hospice.

New Book by Joseph Malvinni Regales Readers with Life and Times of Longtime Hair Stylist

coverMalvinni

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Seasoned Stylist” by Joseph Malvinni.

Author Joseph Malvinni shares the ups and downs of his 30-year career as a hair stylist in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Malvinni provides valuable information about the tips and tricks that led to his longevity in a business that thrives on change.

As a kid, Joseph Malvinni had no intention of becoming a hairstylist. His father was the neighborhood barber, and he grew up in the barbershop; the busy buzz of the shop was appealing, and Joseph found himself spending all of his free time there, soaking up the atmosphere. As this new book describes, after he graduated from high school, Joseph found himself directionless, so he chose to enter hairdressing school in hopes of generating an income after only a year of study. Little did he know this decision would lead to a decades-long career that would shape his life and family.

Through the years, Joseph honed his styling skills and gleaned information from his employers, eventually venturing out to open his own salon. Through trial and error, Joseph eventually settled into the salon that would become his “home” and developed a loyal client base. There were trials, but with help from faithful employees and his loving wife, Maryanne, Joseph managed to prevail, making “the world a better place, one haircut at a time.”

“The Seasoned Stylist” offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a working hair stylist, with fun anecdotes about the crazy antics one can find in a salon. Author Joseph Malvinni, who has been a working hairstylist for more than 30 years, delves into his long career to provide helpful hints to anyone interested in opening a small business. Malvinni lives with his wife, Maryanne, and enjoys visiting with his children and grandchildren. This is his first book.

Hollywood Star-maker Shares Methods for Becoming a Star; Bernard Hiller Releases New Book

coverHutchings

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Stop Acting Start Living: A Revolutionary Guide to Achieving Success in Show Business and Life” by Bernard Hiller.

Hollywood acting teacher and success coach with more than three decades of experience describes techniques for approaching acting that will transform lives and careers in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Success is not an accident but a way of life. That’s the premise behind author Bernard Hiller’s new book in which he shares techniques for helping actors and people from the business world accomplish their goals and live with passion. At its heart is his belief that to succeed in acting, one must first succeed in life, with greater understanding of life leading to success on the stage, in business and in relationships.

“Stop Acting Start Living: A Revolutionary Guide to Achieving Success in Show Business and Life” gets down to basics, detailing the four stages of learning for actors: unconscious incompetence, when someone is unaware of how disconnected, unskilled and unprepared he is for the journey; conscious incompetence, when someone becomes fully aware of their artistic and personal limitations but not how to resolve them; conscious competence, when someone has trained and knows how to perform but still needs to think about it; and unconscious competence, when someone is performing at the highest level because it’s become second nature.

A contract that lists expectations and responsibilities for actors as students is just one tool Hiller uses in his teaching. He also reminds students that they need to keep the business side of acting in mind, whether it’s selling their particular talent or performing energy, taking risks or being optimistic. Actors are urged to work out their talent regularly with basic exercises such as taking a dance class to keep them in touch with their body, playing someone else for a day or simply observing people and their body language. He describes potential stumbling blocks for becoming an authentic actor and offers insights into the acting world only a Hollywood insider could provide.

Acting and living are inextricably linked. As Hiller writes, “There is not a single day that goes by that we are not using acting to play different roles in our lives. … How well we play each part will determine our success in our life.”

For the last 35 years, author Bernard Hiller has been a successful actor, dancer, singer and acting coach. The Broadway performer has appeared in television shows and films. He trained at The High School of Performing Arts in New York City. Although Hiller now trains Hollywood professionals and actors and business leaders in 14 countries, he began teaching in New York City. His clients include LL Cool J, Billy Crystal, Cameron Diaz and Nadja Swarovski of Swarovski Crystal. Bob Proctor of “The Secret” stated that Bernard Hiller is one of the best Personal Development Coaches I have ever known”.
