Collection of Short Stories and Devotions Gives Encouragement to the Aged, their Loved Ones and Care Givers-book by Diane Doering

Author Diane Doering, a licensed minister, missionary and co-director of an international non-profit, focuses on the thoughts, feelings and circumstances of the elderly in this new release. The stories and devotions in Finding Life in the Last Season encourage understanding and empathy with those who are entering the final chapter of their lives and also provide comfort and hope to those who find themselves in their “last season.”

In Finding Life in the Last Season, published by Dog Ear Publishing, Doering addresses the pain and loss of end-of-life issues in a straightforward way. Drawing on her experience as an outreach minister in care facilities for the aged, sick and dying, Doering writes about a myriad of human situations: the bond of aging sisters who are very different from one another, a wife’s heartache as she cares for her husband with dementia, and the quiet, contemplative scene as a daughter looks in on her elderly parents preparing to move to a nursing home. There are also devotions and ruminations that include passages of scripture and directly address our spiritual and emotional needs as we grow older.

Doering believes that God’s word is clear in the esteem he places on the elderly. In writing this book, she desires to give hope and encouragement to those who are approaching the end of their lives. As the youngest of the baby boomers turn 50, more people of this generation are taking on the role of care giver to aging parents. Not only will Finding Life in the Last Season be a comfort to Senior Citizens, but also to anyone who spends time with the elderly, whether socially, familiarly or in a care giving capacity.

Female Pastor Offers Encouraging Words to Women Hiding their Husband’s Shocking Secrets- book by Pastor Shirley

S.E.C.R.E.T.S of the First Ladies, Volume I, published by Dog Ear Publishing, is the first release in a controversial three-part series. This compelling book graphically details the stories of the first 10 of 21 courageous women, First Ladies within the church who are praying because their husbands are preying. The title stands for Silence Encourages Cruelty and reality Eventually Threatens your Sanity. The book illustrates that secrets of this magnitude destroy the women from the inside out.

The women live in the fictitious town of Sea Crest, where all the streets begin with the letter “S,” symbolizing the many secrets they keep. These Spirit-filled First Ladies bare their souls and some even risked their physical safety in order to help others by revealing explicit stories of their husband’s incest, infidelity, pedophilia, homosexuality, and physical abuse. That these offenses are taking place in the one place thought to be a safe haven — the church, is the greatest sin of all.

The First Ladies are reminded that their wedding vows do not include abuse in any form and they are urged to break the silence holding them hostage. The book aims to give solace and comfort to first ladies struggling with these issues, letting them know they are not alone and assuring them of God’s love and plan for them. They are urged to break their silence because as the author writes, “Silence is the devil’s best friend.”

S.E.C.R.E.T.S, which incorporates Bible scripture and personal observations, also includes chapters about signs of abuse, pornography and addiction, as well as chapters on forgiveness and how to select a therapist or other support system.

Rev. Dr. Shirley Gordon, a First Lady herself, is the founder and Senior Pastor of Praise Temple Ministries, where she is affectionately known as “Pastor Shirley.” She and her husband, Elder Ken Gordon Sr., have three children. Pastor Shirley is an author, entrepreneur, mentor, counselor, and motivational speaker.

Starship Crew Embarks on a Space Odyssey to Colonize a Distant, Enigmatic World- book by Mel Highline

Five Hundred years have passed since a man first took that one small step on the moon. Now the human race is ready for the next giant leap. The starship, ESC-1, the most ambitious and costly project ever undertaken, begins its historic journey to a world far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. Though the destination is light-years and decades away, Captain Tara Nelson and her crew believe they are ready to overcome any obstacle.

They are wrong!

Only a few years after arriving, just as the colony begins to flourish, they discover countless waves of asteroids hurtling toward their new home from the outer reaches of the star system. At first, surrounded by their 26th century technology, they are undaunted by the new challenge. Then that technology begins to fail and the colonists find themselves in a desperate struggle for survival. It is a struggle that most will lose.

So begins another journey for Tara Nelson and a handful of survivors. One of epic proportion, they are unsuspecting travelers who are no longer in control of their destiny. Soon, they forget their past. Earth becomes legend, then myth.

In time, however, the systematic onslaught from space ends and the colony’s survivors prosper once again. They begin to rebuild at a startling pace and it seems that they may one day be able to reclaim parity with their ancestral civilization. Yet, despite their astounding progress, not all is as it appears.

At the onset, Til We Come To Be, published by Dog Ear Publishing and written by Mel Highline, is a story about the colonization of an unspoiled new world many light-years from Earth. Ultimately, however, it is a discourse on courage, the unflagging human spirit and the indomitable will to survive against all odds.

Nurses Tell their Compelling Stories about the Ups and Downs of Nursing-book by Karen Buley

The editor, a nurse for 31 years, has collected stories from 25 nurses who share frustrations and hope, victories and regret, what brought them to nursing and what makes them stay. One nurse writes of helping a grateful patient through blood transfusions, while another tells of a birth happening so quickly there was no time to get the doctor. Others share insights into why people choose this profession. A home care and hospice nurse writes, “Suddenly I was possessed with the urge to literally turn my head to the sky and say, ‘If you let me keep my daughter I promise I’ll give you something back.’ My desire to become a nurse had finally decided to announce itself.”

Buley was inspired to compile the stories for Nurses on the Run, published by Dog Ear Publishing, during a 2005 childbirth conference where the keynote speaker asked, “Who will answer the call lights?” The discussion that followed about the nursing shortage planted the seed for this powerful work, which ends with a call to combat the current nursing shortage. To further this cause, 10 percent of the book’s proceeds will be donated to nurse educator scholarships.

Karen Buley works in Obstetrics in Missoula, Montana, and has been published in A Cup of Comfort for Nurses, Directions in Nursing, American Nurse Today, Nursing Made Incredibly Easy, Family Circle, Holiday Voices, and Montana Voices.

Compelling Dramas Explore the Plight of Jews in Poland During the Holocaust- book by Leopold Szor

The year is 1942 and the world around you has come undone. You and everyone you know – parents, friends, neighbors – are hunted down and exterminated like vermin. What would you be willing to do to survive? If you were lucky enough to make it through the Holocaust how would you feel? Could you live with the ghosts of all those less fortunate than you? Could you ever again find meaning in your everyday life knowing first hand the pain and misery suffered by so many around you?

Leopold Szor is a Holocaust survivor, one of the fortunate few who have had to wrestle with these issues. A successful New York businessman now retired, Leo found a novel way to deal with the ghosts and memories of his tormented war years. Rather than push his skeletons deeper into the closet Leo spent years exploring the darkness of the Holocaust, reading every work of fact and fiction based in that dark period. And then he began to write. An amateur playwright, Leo very successfully exploited the dramatic form to examine and explore the entire range of human emotion and interactions brought on during these extraordinary times.

Leo’s son Daniel created a compilation of these short plays, written over a 10-year period, the centerpiece of which – The True Messiah – was produced onstage to critical acclaim in 1997. In this play we witness the collision between pragmatism and romance as Rosa, a polish housecleaner, balances her desire for love with her need for financial security. The Chosen People takes place in the Deep South of the post-war United States, an unexpected setting for two survivors to confront their very different wartime ghosts. Both Kaddish and Who? Hitler? also explore ghosts from the past, and the difficulty in reconciling wartime horrors with postwar realities. Finally we are reminded, in Anna’s Children, of the shocking choices which must too often be faced during the fog of war.

The Dog Ear Publishing published compilation begins with a foreword – “In Memoriam” – through which we learn some of the terrible ordeals experienced by Leo during the Shoah. Near the end of this moving introduction he concludes that in his view survival “bestows an obligation to speak out until the last breath”. Leo has done exactly that, and in doing so has given us a gift of these unforgettable and provocative dramatic gems.

New Novel Melds Time Travel, Historical Fiction- book by Constance C. Castleberry

A chance sighting by 32-year-old Jane Bixby on her way home from class at local university changes the course of her life and her views of history and time. She stops at an old farmhouse and sees two men fixing shingles on the roof. But they are wearing old-fashioned clothes: baggy pants held up with suspenders that button. As she continues to stare at them, they notice her. “Yet the harder I stared, the more difficult it became to see them. They appeared to be fading away.” Finally, they disappear. She drives away quickly and returns to her scientific research.

The scientist’s life takes another turn when she meets two brilliant physicists working on a secret project at the university. They think she’s the perfect subject for their experiment – traveling back in time. An old family photo of the farmhouse found in a secret closet in her grandmother’s house and a desire to find out about her own past overcomes Jane’s resistance to the project, and she agrees to make the trip. This decision will affect the rest of her life.

The Gateway, published by Dog Ear Publishing and written by Constance C. Castleberry, takes readers on a thrilling journey as Jane experiences the true trip of a lifetime. As she meets people from her own history – and changes theirs – she realizes that time is not the constant she thought it was. This novel will resonate with fans of historical fiction, science fiction and fantasy, from its straightforward beginning through the masterful twists and turns leading up to its shocking conclusion.

New Release Tells Stories of the Ordinary and the Extraordinary- book by Lupe Mirelez

This collection of ordinary people’s extraordinary stories captures the strength and resiliency of the human spirit as it struggles to overcome tremendous adversity. These stories capture the dichotomy of life’s realities; good and bad, beautiful and ugly, the cowardly and courageous. Each story captures the complexity of human experience. The author, a practicing registered nurse, has dedicated her long career to caring for critically ill children. These children along with her own life’s experiences, have helped her develop a razor sharp sixth sense; an ability to hear beyond the spoken word, and to see beyond the obvious. She considers this ability both a gift and a burden. Although this gift has been a major part of her nursing success, its burden, at times, tortures her with a deeper and not always peaceful, perspective to the human experience. With age and maturity, she has learned to accept the power and beauty of her gift as a gift of Grace. She draws on it, and on her life’s experiences, to tell the stories of those people and children who have touched her life.

Of Moments and Miracles by Lupe Mirelez brings to life the stories of seven people and their impact on the author’s life. Stories like “Olga’s Promise Ring”, features the author’s sister and the author’s family. It is a story about young love, insurmountable adversity and a tragic end; an ending so surreal it defies an explanation of coincidence. “Commitment”, the story of her son Steven, and his wife Amanda, focuses on the love and strength of their wedding vows, even as they face the uncertainty of Steven’s Cancer. “Till Death Do Us Part”, features the devotion of a couple, married 50 years, who have come to the end of their commitment, and are having to say goodbye. They are the example of how it’s done.

This gripping work, published by Dog Ear Publishing, provides moments of inspiration and heartbreak – sometimes within the same chapter. Readers from all walks of life will be touched by the words within, and share the author’s admiration for the heroes in her book. Her stories are dedicated “to all people who refuse to allow their spirit to be broken by unimaginable adversity; they choose to love and forgive despite their burdens, and life’s uncertainty.”

Memoir Showcases Art Teacher’s Passion for Education- book by Eugene Patrizi

Eugene Patrizi was extraordinary from his first day of life, Oct. 21, 1931. He weighed 12 pounds at birth, an unusual weight for the era of the Great Depression. This “baby” of the family became an uncle at age 3 and grew up with his nieces and nephews. This son of Italian immigrants had artistic talent at an early age, with teachers and adults admiring his images. His reading skills were just as developed. The author desperately wanted to be educated – attend college. But life intervened, and he needed to take care of his parents.

Patrizi was drafted during the Korean War for medical training, serving two years in the Medical Corps. After his honorable discharge, he lived with his divorced sister in a tiny apartment. Escaping this dreary life, he enrolled at Northern Illinois State Teachers College in DeKalb, thanks to the GI Bill. College allowed his talents to flourish, and he became president of the Art Guild. His life changed when two professors asked him to consider teaching art, which was a change from his original plan to be a commercial artist. He taught for seven years in Berwyn, Ill., became art coordinator for all seven schools in that city and retired in 1986 from teaching after 20 years at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, completing a Master of Arts degree at Northern Illinois University along the way.

Everybody’s Uncle, published by Dog Ear Publishing, provides a glimpse into the life of a self-made man, accomplished dancer, artist and inspirational teacher. Learn more about this man who was everyone’s “uncle.” Black and white photos of the author’s family and friends offer another look into the past of the author’s extraordinary life.

New Release Adds Logic to Debate of Civil Union and Marriage Rights- book by The Anonymous, MD

Both sides of the same-sex marriage debate should take a look at this Dog Ear Publishing published book that makes a simple suggestion: Remove civil rights from marriage for both gays and straights. The author believes that civil unions should define a legal relationship and be a civil right for anyone, as opposed to marriages being defined that way. He proposes that marriage be a commitment that defines a nonlegal relationship and not be a civil right for anyone. The author’s overriding concern is not to take sides in the controversy but to overcome the lack of logic used to frame current debate.

Through chapters on baptism and birth certificates – and funerals and death certificates – the author points out how religious ceremonies already co-exist with civil traditions. The lengthiest section – on marriage and civil unions offers examples of canon law and civil rights, politicians and prostitutes, Catholics and Mormons, S/M and incense, and gay-sex and the afterlife to graphically illustrate the sensibly simple solution. The book leaves readers with this final charge: for churches and gay people to respect each other, work together and come together “to say that marriages are religious, spiritual, emotional, romantic issues and civil unions are legal statuses such that marriages have nothing to do with civil unions.”
