Dog Ear Publishing releases “Loving Again: Precious Chelsea and the Queen of Sheba” by Karen Blaser.

Precious Chelsea stole her owner’s heart from their first day together. The author relays the many adventures she and the German Shepherd experienced in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Little did author Karen Blaser imagine how close she and her German Shepherd puppy would become. Indeed, Chelsea’s death more than 12 years later brought almost unbearable pain, but Blaser wouldn’t trade her memories of their companionship for anything. She describes their relationship and adventures in this new book that reads like a love letter to a precious daughter, as well as what happens when someone else enters her life.

“Loving Again: Precious Chelsea and the Queen of Sheba” serves as more than a trip down memory lane. It also showcases the realities and responsibilities of owning and training a pet, important considerations for potential pet owners to understand before they undertake their own journey with a four-legged friend. Chelsea offers a testament to the power of love, and she shows it in endless ways like watching over tiny kittens and licking away Blaser’s tears. But eventually old age catches up with her and Blaser must make the tough decision to help her companion slip away.

Along with lessons learned from having a dog, Blaser shares what happens when love comes again, this time in the form of an adorable German Shepherd puppy she names Sheba. Her new companion brings joy to Blaser once again. They also inspire her to write a rap that children can sing to their own four-legged friends and includes activities pet lovers can appreciate. Blaser writes that she hopes her book can comfort others who have suffered from losing a loving pet.

Author Karen Blaser works in the business world as a trainer/manager at car dealerships and occasional real estate agent. The Connecticut native previously toured the United States and Canada performing with musical groups, studying with a jazz guitarist and opening a guitar studio, graduating summa cum laude with a music theory degree. Volunteering to teach music at church inspired Blaser to enter education, and she earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, moving to the Atlanta area to be principal at a junior academy. She continues to be active at her church.

Twins Share Special Bond in New Illustrated Book by Leslie Rohrbacker

Dog Ear Publishing releases “First Friend, Best Friend” by Leslie Rohrbacker.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “First Friend, Best Friend” by Leslie Rohrbacker.

Twin boys show why they are best friends in this new children’s book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Being a twin means having a friend even before birth. This new book takes readers on a fanciful journey narrated by one of the twins, describing life inside his mother and what happens once they reach the outside world. Born one minute apart, the two boys showcase the special bond that exists between twins.

“First Friend, Best Friend,” inspired by the real-life journey of the author and her twin sons, relays a series of adventures the boys experience from birth to their first day of school. Although they are twins, they aren’t identical. One has brown eyes while the other has blue, one is a bit smaller than the other, and one likes to sleep in while the other gets up early. Despite their differences, the twins share the most wonderful gift of all: Being each other’s first friend and best friend. Colorful watercolor illustrations by Katy Betz provide a delightful accompaniment to this charming story of brotherly love.

This is the first book for author Leslie Rohrbacker, a published blogger who also is a lawyer and executive. She and her husband live in northern New Jersey with their twin boys, who inspired Rohrbacker to write the book. Katy Betz is an illustration professor and has created work for books, magazines and exhibits.

Sherlock Holmes Takes On JFK Assassination in a New Book by Stephen Ladds

Dog Ear Publishing releases “JFK: 4 Out of 3” by Stephen Ladds.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “JFK: 4 Out of 3” by Stephen Ladds.

A young psychiatrist challenges a patient known only as Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery of the assassination of President Kennedy in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. His theories provide new insights into this modern-day mystery.

A dark and rainy night brings a wheelchair-bound man who refuses to speak to authorities to the Baker Clinic, a former orphanage that now serves those with mental impairments. In this new book, the young psychiatrist caring for the patient, known only as Sherlock Holmes, challenges him to resolve the mysteries of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Was the assassination the result of a conspiracy or the work of a single gunman? Set in 1989, this blend of fact and fiction includes humor and even romance as Holmes provides new deductions related to the historic event that changed a nation.

“JFK: 4 Out of 3” questions the Warren Commission’s report, which concluded Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman, firing three shots: one hit the president’s head, another missed and the third struck both the president and Gov. Connally – a hotly debated conclusion. Abraham Zapruder, a bystander, captured the event with his 8mm home movie camera, and it’s this film and other material that Holmes studies as he attempts to determine what really happened that fateful day. As Holmes begins to deduce new aspects of the assassination, the young psychiatrist grows closer to him and to his bewitching secretary. Will the greatest detective of the 19th century be able to solve the greatest mystery of the 20th century or is he nothing more than another mental patient?

Author Stephen Ladds, who was 6 at the time of the assassination Nov. 22, 1963, became interested in the assassination of John F. Kennedy in high school when a friend showed him a book by Josiah Thompson, “Six Seconds in Dallas,” offering theories on multiple gunmen. Years later, after reading a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about his amazing detective Sherlock Holmes and coincidentally viewing a documentary by Nigel Turner, “The Men Who Killed Kennedy,” Ladds writes that he decided to explore what might happen if Sherlock Holmes turned his brilliant mind to the case. This book, more than two decades in the making, is the result.

Indian Legend Comes To Life in Laura J. Stegmaier’s New Children’s Book

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Ling-Ling Turner, PPI: Mystery of the Rising Island” by Laura J. Stegmaier

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Ling-Ling Turner, PPI: Mystery of the Rising Island” by Laura J. Stegmaier

A young girl and her friends know there’s more than meets the eye when lakefront construction work unearths a mysterious floating mass in this new middle-grade book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Connecticut’s Northwest Hills conjure up images of winding country roads, 18th century clapboard houses, spectacular fall foliage, and the next Christmas tree for Rockefeller Plaza. Briarwood Cove, a fictional Norman Rockwellesque hamlet ensconced deep in these hills, conjures up one additional thing – paranormal activity. It’s a good thing eleven-year-old adopted Chinese empath/precognitive Ling-Ling Turner is a resident. Ling-Ling is a PPI (Paranormal Private Investigator). When strange things happen in town, most adults either “pooh-pooh” them or come up with a logical explanation. Ling-Ling knows better – she is a firm believer in the veracity of paranormal activity, who delves into bizarre occurrences to seek the truth.

In Ling-Ling Turner, PPI: Mystery of the Rising Island, doom casts a shadow over Briarwood Cove when blasting at a lakefront construction site releases a floating stink pile of muck from the depths of frosty Lake Tahaso. Coyotes arrive in town, and mysterious attacks on domesticated animals occur at night. While the local police deem coyotes responsible for the attacks, Ling-Ling and her friends Chloe, Jada, and Pablo discover the truth: the tiny town is under the spell of a revived massive ancient Indian curse!

Author Laura J. Stegmaier has written children’s fiction in a variety of media, including graphic novels, internationally broadcast animated television series, audio books and comic strips. The deep woods surrounding her longtime home in the rural Northwest Hills of Connecticut, as well as her belief in otherworldly and paranormal phenomena, inspire her writing.

Nutrition Expert Offers Meal-Planning Guide; Dora Asare-Morrison Releases New Book

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” by Dora Asare-Morrison.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” by Dora Asare-Morrison.

Readers learn how to incorporate foods from across Ghana while staying healthy in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

You are what you eat. That’s a sentence that appears to have become ever more important as scientists explore the link between nutrition and good health. This new book details good eating habits and the crops found across Ghana and beyond, as well as featuring the nutritional content of foods and how to plan affordable meals that taste good and maintain health.

“Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” is written for Ghanaian residents, community leaders and healthcare professionals, aimed at satisfying a hunger for information about proper nutrition to stay healthy. The author writes that in Ghana, few people can have three healthy meals a day. Instead, most struggle to create one decent meal, a light breakfast and snack. Climate change affecting crop production and the expansion of urban sprawl into former farmland has reduced the amount of food produced and driven up prices. Creating healthy meals on a low budget becomes a matter of survival.

Author Dora Asare-Morrison, an experienced dietitian, gives a brief lesson on nutrition, followed by sections on food groups such as dairy, legumes, fruits, meats, vegetables and grains, as well as planning meals for specific times of day, snacks and healthy drinks. A glossary, easy-to-understand charts and reference list offer further resources for those who want to delve more deeply into this important topic.

Dora Asare-Morrison was raised in Ghana and has experience with cuisine from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the United States. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical dietetics and nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh. Asare-Morrison has more than 20 years of clinical experience in acute care, sub-acute care and rehabilitation hospitals. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist, licenses dietitian in Texas, certified nutrition support dietitian and certified nutrition support clinician. She also has experience in intensive care, medical/surgical units, neurology intensive care and outpatient dialysis centers across the United States. Asare-Morrison serves as a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, affiliated with the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Practice Group.

Harry Kendall Dowdy Jr. Preserves Family Stories for Future Generations in New Book

coverDowdy

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Crimson Waterfall: The Story of the Dowdys and Six Related Families” by Harry Kendall Dowdy Jr.

This new book released by Dog Ear Publishing shares the life and times of six families connected to the author, as well as historical facts and his original adages and poetry.

History is created by the individuals who move through it, whether they experience triumph or tragedy. This new book chronicles the lives and accomplishments of author Harry Kendall Dowdy Jr.’s extended family, covering his direct line and that of six families related to it: Scarboroughs, Clarks, Westons, Wrights, Shivers and Scotts. As well as revealing true personal stories, Dowdy puts his relatives into historical context, describing little-known facts and people from the past.

Dowdy’s family contains blood ties from at least three ethnic groups: African-American, Irish and Cherokee, leading to a rich heritage. “Crimson Waterfall: The Story of the Dowdys and Six Related Families” reveals some of that heritage with such stories as how the mulatto son of a white man became a plantation owner and sent many of his 21 children to college; how a university dean and president ended up at the center of first sit-ins at Greensboro, N.C.; and how a man who started high school at the ripe age of 21 went on to become a renowned research scientist.

Readers will learn why Georgia’s readmission to the Union after the Civil War was revoked and later reinstated; how the Civil War led to the creation of West Virginia, and the extent of Southern white opposition to the Confederacy.  Personal commentaries and more than 35 original poems by the author show the true value of family and its lasting effect on individuals and the world.

Photographs, historic documents, family trees, family medical history, family bloodlines, and a listing of achievements by family members enhance this book, which was 22 years in the making. Dowdy, born and raised in South Carolina, now lives in Mitchellville, MD.

New Novel Creates Intriguing Mystery Based on Today’s Headlines; Ian Greenham Releases New Book

coverGreenhamJustice

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Justice Down” by Ian Greenham.

Author Ian Greenham turns current legal headlines into an unforgettable mystery in his latest book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Conservative Supreme Court Justice Damon King is quietly murdered in his study at home, and FBI Agent Dexter Chambeau is assigned to find which of King’s many enemies was responsible.

Supreme Court Justice Damon King garnered many enemies during his 25 years on the nation’s highest court. His rigidly conservative opinions on gun rights, gay rights, abortion, and capital punishment played a crucial role in building hostility amongst left wing opponents, as much as it made him the darling of the far right. King was a harsh, distant parent, alienating his children through his uncompromising insistence on adherence to strictly conservative values. King and his fellow conservative judges were on the brink of overturning one of the most controversial liberal precedents of the last 50 years when he was found dead in his own home.

FBI agent Dexter Chambeau, a long-time bureau veteran, is called in to collar the criminal responsible. Chambeau is stymied by the large number of suspects, as King’s divisive rulings and abrasive personality have enraged any number of people. Every lead Chambeau follows turns into a dead end; the lack of evidence is maddening. Chambeau’s attraction to King’s divorced daughter, Eleanor, a journalist, only complicates his task. Will the seasoned veteran crack this high-profile case, or will justice be served better if King’s murderer eludes Chambeau’s grasp? Justice Down is an entertaining thriller, packed with twists and turns that will leave the reader wondering whodunit until the last pages are turned.

Author Ian Greenham, a native of Melbourne, Australia, worked as a lawyer with one of Australia’s leading commercial law firms before serving in the country’s diplomatic service. Eventually, he was recruited by a major U.S. bank, and after assignments spanning the globe, has settled in New York City. His abiding interest in the law and its social ramifications gave him the ballast for the controversial themes in this, his second novel.

Carolyn Beale Shotsky Releases New Book Set in Civil War Era

coverShotsky

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Alice Mavery: A Question of Valor” by author

A young woman with strong Christian values not only survives but thrives in the years leading up to and during the Civil War in this new collection released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Life brings change many times for Alice Mavery, an Irish orphan found tied to a riverbank in rural Ohio when she was just a young girl. This new historical novel shares Alice’s story as she comes of age in the Civil War and must cope with politics and society during a time when life was a struggle for many Americans.

“Alice Mavery: A Question of Honor,” which begins in Pike County, Ohio, starts when a drifter of sorts and his dog find a young girl by herself on a riverbank. He brings the little girl to a German widow and fervent Christian who lives on a farm, and the loving woman raises her as her own. When her guardian dies before the Civil War begins, Alice is ripped from the tightknit community she once knew by an uncaring young man. She moves to a town later attacked by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his men and begins caring for the wounded, starting with an arrogant young lieutenant named Jon – an act that will forever change her life.

Alice moves once again, this time to Kentucky, where she is taken in by Jon’s grandparents, a devoted couple who live on a farm. Divided not just by politics but by faith, Alice and Jon soon find themselves in the midst of a personal war, with both determined to stand by their cause. Will Jon have the courage to take a leap of faith or will he ride off to war again without the power of prayer? Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, this story of love and honor reverberates with authentic descriptions of life in the mid 19th century and the men and women who helped form a nation.

Author Carolyn Beale Shotsky and her husband, Bill, live in south central Ohio and have five children.

B. Timothy Pennington Sheds Light on UFO Sightings in New Book

coverPennington

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Science, Skeptics and UFOS: A Reluctant Scientist Explores the World of UFOs” by B. Timothy Pennington

A retired scientist with nearly 40 years of experience as a chemist shares his perspective on UFO activity – including some he witnessed in the 1970s in central Mississippi – in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

A farm in central Mississippi might seem like an unlikely place for UFO activity, but that’s just what the author and his family saw in the 1970s. Decades later, author B. Timothy Pennington began to research what he and his family experienced now that he was retired and not afraid of what speculation might do to his career as a scientist. In this new book he shares his observations and conclusions about UFOs, including some history about the field of UFO study. He draws on personal recollections and interviews with family members to supplement his own research into the phenomenon.

“Science, Skeptics and UFOS: A Reluctant Scientist Explores the World of UFOs” adds a unique voice to those who have reported seeing an unidentified flying object. The author writes that he found six widely reported Mississippi UFO cases, most of which he had been unaware of previously. Of the four well known Mississippi cases that occurred in the 1970s, each shared some aspects of what his family experienced. And his family had plenty of experiences. Pennington writes that the ongoing sightings – almost 40 of them – took place over more than a decade, and most were within six miles of the family farm in Smith County, Mississippi. The sightings began in the mid-1930s when his paternal grandmother and her children saw a shaft of light 30 to 40 feet in diameter coming from the sky while on an evening walk. There was no conceivable source for the light as the area didn’t have electricity until after World War II and helicopters with spotlights were decades away. Since a sighting in the early1980s, there had been a lapse of over 25 years before the sightings resumed in 2011. The sightings ranged over a period of nearly 80 years and four generations after a spectacular set of sightings occurred in the summer of 2013.

In the 1970s, the author himself saw a silent white light in the sky repeatedly flying back and forth between two hovering lights. Other relatives were startled by a large object with bright lights noiselessly hovering over them as it blocked out the nighttime sky.  Family members saw numerous instances of a light at low altitude slowly crossing and lighting up a field, a flying saucer and series of lights at a community dump, a light that seemed to follow someone’s car, and there was even an account of an abduction. Pennington examines the scientific and skeptical points of view and freely explores alternative explanations for the sightings ranging from high-tech military aircraft to the tectonic strain theory as well as ball lightning, skyhook balloons, the auto-kinetic effect, and psychological causes. Charts, illustrations, and statistical analysis add up to one conclusion for Pennington:  Millions of people on our planet have witnessed UFO phenomena, which are real and unexplained, – and the phenomena continue unabated while most of the scientific establishment looks the other way when someone dares to say U-F-O.

Author B. Timothy Pennington, a member of the American Chemical Society for more than 35 years, has 21 U.S. patents as an inventor and co-inventor. He spent 30 years working in the chemical industry near Lake Charles, La., after teaching and writing scripts for chemistry videotapes as part of a National Science Foundation grant. Pennington has seven publications in scientific journals and two trade industry publications. He earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Southern Mississippi and spent two years of postdoctoral research at the USDA Eastern Regional Research Center near Philadelphia and was a Robert A. Welsh postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Texas at Arlington before teaching at Navarro College. He and his wife, Esther, have three adult daughters and live in Sulphur, La.

David R. Branon Weaves Assassinations, Secrets into New Thriller

coverBranon

Dog Ear Publishing releases “The Spider’s Web” by David R. Branon

Everyone has secrets to keep when four Supreme Court justices get assassinated. Murder, intrigue and plot twists take center stage in this captivating and humorous thriller released by Dog Ear Publishing.

The assassination of four Supreme Court justices thanks to wine spiked with poison sets off a chain reaction of events that sparks the investigative curiosity of FBI Special Agent Ridge Walker Trueheart, an Oglala Sioux Indian who has never forgotten what happened to his ancestors. Murder, conspiracies and unforgettably colorful characters come together in this new, tongue-in-cheek thriller by a former CEO. The closer Trueheart gets to the truth, the more those around him work to throw him off the scent.

“The Spider’s Web” raises the eyebrows right from the start when the book opens with a daring hit. Trueheart eventually runs across an unlikely suspect, Annabelle “Happy” Holiday, who is country mouse clever but eventually falls victim to avaricious city rats and a judicial system that supports eminent domain. Every character in the book has a secret to keep, from the president and vice president of the United States to the directors of the CIA and the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division, as well as a vicious Mafia don. Enter the lovely – and ruthless — Dakota Kilgore, whose true purpose is a mystery.

Ultra-rich “patriots” dedicated to keeping the country safe and power in their pockets – even if it means violating the very principles upon which the nation was founded – add to the twists and turns of the book as it spins on to its surprising conclusion.

This is the second novel for author David Branon, who also wrote the well-received “The Curmudgeon’s Tree.” Branon served as chief executive officer of a business that was folded into a worldwide sporting goods conglomerate, becoming chairman of the multimillion-dollar Americas operation before deciding to retire to pursue the passion of words rather than the sterility of bottom-line numbers. The magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University lives with his wife in Greenville, South Carolina.
