Dog Ear Publishing releases “Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” by Dora Asare-Morrison.

Readers learn how to incorporate foods from across Ghana while staying healthy in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

You are what you eat. That’s a sentence that appears to have become ever more important as scientists explore the link between nutrition and good health. This new book details good eating habits and the crops found across Ghana and beyond, as well as featuring the nutritional content of foods and how to plan affordable meals that taste good and maintain health.

“Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” is written for Ghanaian residents, community leaders and healthcare professionals, aimed at satisfying a hunger for information about proper nutrition to stay healthy. The author writes that in Ghana, few people can have three healthy meals a day. Instead, most struggle to create one decent meal, a light breakfast and snack. Climate change affecting crop production and the expansion of urban sprawl into former farmland has reduced the amount of food produced and driven up prices. Creating healthy meals on a low budget becomes a matter of survival.

Author Dora Asare-Morrison, an experienced dietitian, gives a brief lesson on nutrition, followed by sections on food groups such as dairy, legumes, fruits, meats, vegetables and grains, as well as planning meals for specific times of day, snacks and healthy drinks. A glossary, easy-to-understand charts and reference list offer further resources for those who want to delve more deeply into this important topic.

Dora Asare-Morrison was raised in Ghana and has experience with cuisine from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the United States. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical dietetics and nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh. Asare-Morrison has more than 20 years of clinical experience in acute care, sub-acute care and rehabilitation hospitals. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist, licenses dietitian in Texas, certified nutrition support dietitian and certified nutrition support clinician. She also has experience in intensive care, medical/surgical units, neurology intensive care and outpatient dialysis centers across the United States. Asare-Morrison serves as a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, affiliated with the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Practice Group.

Luther Drakeford Relays How Low Noise Leads to High Marks in New Book

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Quiet Please” by Luther Drakeford.

The importance of schoolwork shines through this book release by Dog Ear Publishing that’s part memoir, part instruction guide.

Having a quiet place to study can make all the difference in a student’s grades. The author of this new book found out the hard way that sometimes leaving home is the only way to be a productive, effective student. Luther Drakeford did poorly in school while his twin brother did well. The difference was that his brother found quiet places to study, such as the library, and put cotton in his ears so he could sleep at night despite his parents’ loud arguing. Luther did neither of these things and suffered as a result.

“Quiet Please” tells the true story of Luther and his brother Arthur, represented by twins Joey and Johnny, in this book designed for adults and young people. Growing up in New York City with verbally abusive parents who drank was hard for Joey, who fell asleep in class and had poor study habits, barely passing his classes. Johnny, meanwhile, seemed to flourish because he was willing to stay away from HOME during homework time and do whatever it took to get enough sleep. A concerned teacher tried to help, and once Joey began to study at a friend’s quiet home, be did better in school.

In his book, Drakeford remembers certain teachers more than 60 years later and a friend who inspired him to read, starting with Outdoor Life magazines. He also cherishes a friend who lived in a quiet home with encouraging parents who welcomed him with open arms. Drakeford urges parents to provide a similar quiet atmosphere for studying, reminding them that a loud radio, television, or arguing and abusive parents or siblings can cause serious damage to study habits. Colorful illustrations by Alan Margolis punctuate Drakeford’s heartfelt message of encouragement to students to do their best.

Author Luther Drakeford, who grew up in the Bronx in New York City, has spent almost 30 years working around elementary children as a New York City School Fireman and School Engineer, and volunteering as a court-appointed advocate for a teenage boy. He was inspired to write the book as a resource for parents and students. He and his wife, Helen, have been married for 43 years and have four children and three grandchildren.
