Dog Ear Publishing releases “Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” by Dora Asare-Morrison.

Readers learn how to incorporate foods from across Ghana while staying healthy in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

You are what you eat. That’s a sentence that appears to have become ever more important as scientists explore the link between nutrition and good health. This new book details good eating habits and the crops found across Ghana and beyond, as well as featuring the nutritional content of foods and how to plan affordable meals that taste good and maintain health.

“Beyond Everyday Eating: A Nutrition Guide to the Ghanaian Diet” is written for Ghanaian residents, community leaders and healthcare professionals, aimed at satisfying a hunger for information about proper nutrition to stay healthy. The author writes that in Ghana, few people can have three healthy meals a day. Instead, most struggle to create one decent meal, a light breakfast and snack. Climate change affecting crop production and the expansion of urban sprawl into former farmland has reduced the amount of food produced and driven up prices. Creating healthy meals on a low budget becomes a matter of survival.

Author Dora Asare-Morrison, an experienced dietitian, gives a brief lesson on nutrition, followed by sections on food groups such as dairy, legumes, fruits, meats, vegetables and grains, as well as planning meals for specific times of day, snacks and healthy drinks. A glossary, easy-to-understand charts and reference list offer further resources for those who want to delve more deeply into this important topic.

Dora Asare-Morrison was raised in Ghana and has experience with cuisine from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and the United States. She earned a bachelor’s degree in clinical dietetics and nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh. Asare-Morrison has more than 20 years of clinical experience in acute care, sub-acute care and rehabilitation hospitals. She is a registered dietitian nutritionist, licenses dietitian in Texas, certified nutrition support dietitian and certified nutrition support clinician. She also has experience in intensive care, medical/surgical units, neurology intensive care and outpatient dialysis centers across the United States. Asare-Morrison serves as a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, affiliated with the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Practice Group.

Learn How to Live Life to the Fullest with Tips from Jason Hughes in New Book

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Manstein: The Inner Genius Within Us All” by Jason Hughes.

An author who faced an incredible challenge of survival during his teen years urges people to explore their potential for inner genius in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

When fate intervened in his life, author Jason Hughes was forced to forge a new path. A horrific car crash killed his best friend and left Hughes battered in body but profoundly affected by a near-death experience filled with love. In this new book, he shares his belief that everyone possesses an “inner genius” that guides his life and expresses that genius, whether it is physical, mental or spiritual. Hughes calls that concept “Manstein,” in honor of scientific and mathematical genius Albert Einstein and his ability to express himself perfectly during his lifetime.

“Manstein: The Inner Genius Within Us All” aims to show readers how to achieve their own peace, happiness and productivity through developing their inner genius and recognizing their connection to the world and the love that abounds there. Hughes implores people to let go of the fears in their lives and trust in spiritual truth and love. He does not say the process will be easy; indeed, all living things experience ups and downs. Accessing inner genius through relationships, careers, family, hobbies, physical experiences, art or music allows people to shape their journey through life. Tools to realize Manstein include meditation, living according to spiritual law, choosing to be a light in the world, living in the moment, being grateful and – above all – recognizing spiritual love. As Hughes writes in the introduction, “We all have been divinely created to simply be extraordinary and to live a unique life of extraordinary purpose and success in our individual lives.”

Author Jason Hughes was a young rising tennis tournament star growing up in Old Saybrook, Conn., until a car accident at age 16 left him with a traumatic brain injury and killed his best friend. Hughes spent time in a coma and given only a 20 percent chance of survival. Three years of physical therapy helped heal his body, and his near-death experience changed his life. Hughes attended Tyler (Texas) Junior College to become certified by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association to teach tennis. He has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in holistic counseling from Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I. He teaches at the Beverly Hills Tennis Center and is a holistic health life coach.

New Nonfiction Release Story of Survival Despite Heartbreaking Circumstances; Book by Madi Wend

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Drought” by Madi Wend.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Drought” by Madi Wend.

This new nonfiction release published by Dog Ear Publishing tells the story of author Madi Wend’s family and the tragic outcome of her great-grandmother’s decision to take her infant and abandon her two toddlers and her husband.  This act had repercussions for generations to come, resulting in neglect and abuse.

Kitty Mae was young and beautiful, and mourning the loss of her mother to tuberculosis.  Heartbroken and eager to escape her life, 17-year-old Kitty Mae decided to marry a young rancher Wen calls Mr. M.  The two had a family quickly, and they had to move frequently to follow the work.  The stress of frequent upheaval and three children in as many years proved too much for the fragile young girl, and she took her youngest child and fled the house one day, leaving behind her husband and her two young children.  The baby, who was known as Betty Lou, was the author’s grandmother.  Kitty Mae’s premature death led to Betty Lou being placed with older relatives, a stern couple known as Mr. and Mrs. C., who provided food and shelter for the little girl, but nothing in the way of affection or love.

Betty Lou’s presence was tolerated by her adopted parents until she was fourteen.  They decided at that point that they were too old to parent a teenager, and they brokered a marriage with an older man in town.  Married off at 16, Betty Lou embarked upon her adulthood far too soon, and thing didn’t improve as her new husband abused and neglected her, and eventually abandoned her at a pivotal moment of need.  Their eventual divorce led Betty Lou to leave her own daughter, Patty Ann, to be raised by a foster mother, continuing the cycle of abandonment.

Drought is a compelling tale of women scratching out their existence against the odds, fighting against abuse and neglect and eventually triumphing.  Author Madi Wend displays tremendous compassion toward the women, helping the reader to understand the circumstances that might have led these women to make the decisions they made.  Wend is an advocate with a BS in Psychology and Graduate Studies in Mental Health Counseling who focuses on trauma, grief, loss, abuse, and neglect in adults and children.  This is her first book.
