Dog Ear Publishing releases “Loving Again: Precious Chelsea and the Queen of Sheba” by Karen Blaser.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Loving Again: Precious Chelsea and the Queen of Sheba” by Karen Blaser.

Precious Chelsea stole her owner’s heart from their first day together. The author relays the many adventures she and the German Shepherd experienced in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Little did author Karen Blaser imagine how close she and her German Shepherd puppy would become. Indeed, Chelsea’s death more than 12 years later brought almost unbearable pain, but Blaser wouldn’t trade her memories of their companionship for anything. She describes their relationship and adventures in this new book that reads like a love letter to a precious daughter, as well as what happens when someone else enters her life.

“Loving Again: Precious Chelsea and the Queen of Sheba” serves as more than a trip down memory lane. It also showcases the realities and responsibilities of owning and training a pet, important considerations for potential pet owners to understand before they undertake their own journey with a four-legged friend. Chelsea offers a testament to the power of love, and she shows it in endless ways like watching over tiny kittens and licking away Blaser’s tears. But eventually old age catches up with her and Blaser must make the tough decision to help her companion slip away.

Along with lessons learned from having a dog, Blaser shares what happens when love comes again, this time in the form of an adorable German Shepherd puppy she names Sheba. Her new companion brings joy to Blaser once again. They also inspire her to write a rap that children can sing to their own four-legged friends and includes activities pet lovers can appreciate. Blaser writes that she hopes her book can comfort others who have suffered from losing a loving pet.

Author Karen Blaser works in the business world as a trainer/manager at car dealerships and occasional real estate agent. The Connecticut native previously toured the United States and Canada performing with musical groups, studying with a jazz guitarist and opening a guitar studio, graduating summa cum laude with a music theory degree. Volunteering to teach music at church inspired Blaser to enter education, and she earned a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, moving to the Atlanta area to be principal at a junior academy. She continues to be active at her church.

P.J. Fisk Describes Her Quest for God as Mother in Newly Released Book

coverFiskFardulis

Dog Ear Publishing releases “If God Is My Mother, Who Is My Father?” by P.J. Fisk.

A religious scholar shares her spiritual journey in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing, searching for truth amidst age-old traditions of religious thought and the role of women.

Influenced by her Seventh-day Adventist grandmother, the author joined that church by baptism when she was 14 years old, setting the stage for the religious conflict that would reverberate in her life. She spent 15 years working within the education system of the church. In this new book that serves as both a memoir and record of a spiritual journey, P.J. Fisk shares her views of religious conflict, especially as it relates to the roles of men and women in a traditionally patriarchal organization.

“If God Is My Father, Who Is My Mother?” gets personal quickly, opening with Fisk’s description of herself as a pregnant newlywed locked out of her apartment by her husband. It’s a pattern that repeats itself over the years, as Fisk works to obey her husband as religious traditions dictate, no matter what the personal cost to her body and mind. Working as head dean for girls at an Adventist school brings professional success but also personal anguish as Fisk realizes girls are held to a different standard than boys and that standard comes straight from doctrine.

Personal pain and losses, as well as big changes in her life, lead Fisk to question the doctrine she’s followed all of her life. Her studies of spirituality, including reading “The Woman’s Bible,” call into question the assumed maleness of God and the resulting subordination of women both in church and in society. “As long as women accept the position that religions assign her, her emancipation is impossible,” Fisk writes, recognizing her own culpability in how she raised her daughters and granddaughters. Her spiritual journey toward finding the Goddess in God, which continues today, leads her to conclude that a purely patriarchal – or matriarchal – solution will not work. “God cannot be a male with no female in the Godhead,” she writes. Instead, the world needs to embrace the love inherent in the mother aspect of God with help from the mothers now living in the world.

Author P.J. Fisk has studied women and religion for more than 30 years, researching religion from ancient times to the present and focusing on the plight of women as they relate to a predominant male system of religion. She has six children and 12 grandchildren and raised her daughters in a fundamental Christian church based on the patriarchal systems of the Bible. Fisk and her husband, Loren, live by the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Army Officer’s Life Devastated by Aftermath of Serving in Cambodia; Ed Mooney Releases New Novel

coverMooney

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Tears for Cambodia” by Ed Mooney.

Author Ed Mooney paints a vivid portrait of a man troubled by nightmares of his time in 1970s Cambodia in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Officer Max Donatello’s life is irreparably changed due to his inability to deal with his past.

Lt. Colonel Max Donatello left the military decades ago, but his experiences serving in Cambodia never left him. As the story in this new novel relays, his beloved wife, Emily, left him after years of marriage because he refused to share his pain or get professional help that might allow him to move beyond the trauma of his past.  Now Max and his children, Chris and Melissa, are grieving Emily’s untimely death, and Max finds himself reliving past mistakes and looking for a way to make his future (and his relationships with his children) better.

For years, Emily had urged Max to go back to Cambodia, to face the nightmares head on and possibly overcome them. Max resisted, but now he feels compelled to revisit the country that was nearly destroyed by the Khmer Rouge so many years ago. Max’s story is told in flashback, as he relives his former life while visiting the Cambodia of today. Max plans to spend nearly a month in Southeast Asia; will he be able to put the horrors that haunt his dreams to rest, or will they overcome him, destroying his foundering relationship with his family?

Tears for Cambodia is a sympathetic portrait of an officer helplessly following orders, even though he knows they will result in tragedy. Max’s pain and the courage with which he faces his demons are compelling, and readers will be rooting for Max and his redemption.

This is the first novel for author Ed Mooney, who drew upon his personal experience in Cambodia as well as the experiences of a number of other men. Max is created from a composite of these recollections, creating a fascinating first-hand view of a tour in 1970s Cambodia.

New Poetry Collection Shares God’s Grace, Love; Book by Christine Gail Garcia

coverGarcia

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Words by God’s Grace” by Christine Gail Garcia.

A former teacher shares poems inspired by God in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

When Christine Gail Garcia began writing poetry, she did so to express personal communication between her and God. Soon, however, she began to feel that God meant for her work to be shared, so she decided to publish her words, hoping to bring comfort and grace to others. This new book includes prayers asking for strength, prayers of sorrow and pain, prayers asking for forgiveness and prayers of praise and thanksgiving.

“Words by God’s Grace” focuses on the challenges – and the blessings – of everyday life. Each poem is followed by an explanation of the author’s thoughts on the topic, as well as Bible verses related to the topic. In “Saying Goodbye,” Garcia writes of the pain – and the joy – of losing a loved one. “If you know your loved one walked with the Lord, let your heart rejoice, for they go to their reward. Angels have escorted them through the pearly gates, and God has taken them into His embrace.” Her explanation points out that Christians experience grief but know their loved one is with the Lord. It’s the unbelievers who will be parted from their loved ones forever. The author’s anguish for Christ’s suffering is apparent in the poem “My Heart is Broken,” especially these lines: “My heart is broken. His body was broken. Oh, how He suffered because of my sin.” As Garcia writes in the explanation, “Every time I think of how much Jesus suffered to cleanse me of my sins, my heart breaks. … Without His sacrifice, there would be no hope for anyone. No amount of praise and worship is enough.”

This is the first book for author Christine Gail Garcia, a retired schoolteacher. The mother and grandmother writes from the heart based on the trials and tribulations of daily life. Garcia invites readers who have been touched by the book to post on her Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/WordsByGodsGrace.

Journal Promotes New Way of Cultivating Positive Thoughts; New Release by Marcia Hillary, PhD

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Using Mindfulness and Positive Focus to Ease Depression, Anxiety and Pain: A 30-Day Journal” by Marcia Hillary, PhD.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Using Mindfulness and Positive Focus to Ease Depression, Anxiety and Pain: A 30-Day Journal” by Marcia Hillary, PhD.

A psychologist trained in mindfulness techniques offers meditations and exercises in a compact 30-day journal newly released by Dog Ear Publishing.

It can be easy to develop a negative attitude, especially when depression, anxiety and physical pain play a role. This new journal is designed to help people develop a different approach to life, focusing on the positive aspects and coaching readers to reach inner peace. The author approaches life like a garden, comparing negative thoughts to weeds that must be pulled and positive thoughts to a crop that must be cultivated.

“Using Mindfulness and Positive Focus to Ease Depression, Anxiety and Pain: A 30-Day Journal” serves up advice and clear mindfulness-based exercises promoting a sanctuary of sorts from the painful experiences that can arise in everyday life. The author defines “mindfulness” as “paying attention to the present moment, without judging that moment as good or bad, painful or pain free, positive or negative,” adding that paying attention to the present moment “allows us to fully live in the present moment.”

The journal includes self-rating exercises to take stock of physiological, mental, emotional and spiritual states; meditation; body scans to really concentrate on parts of the body; awareness exercises; and positive statements. Easy-to-fill-in pages for each day of the journal provide reminders of the exercises, and a list of references offers further resources for those interested in changing their lives for the better.

Author Marcia Hillary, PhD, is a psychologist and coach trained in mindfulness techniques by master facilitators Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. Hillary also is trained and certified in guided imagery and clinical hypnosis and works with individuals, couples and groups. She belongs to the American Psychological Association, American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Institute of Noetic Sciences, among others.
