Jadwiga Radon Provides Weapon to Fight Diabetes with New Book

coverRadon

Dog Ear Publishing releases “America Not That Beautiful” by Jadwiga Radon

A diabetic shares tips and tricks for dealing with diabetes in this new self-help book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Although freedom and resources enhance the U.S.’s image as a land of plenty, that reputation has a dark side: obesity. In her new book, an author and diabetic challenges Americans to change their lifestyle while they still can. As she points out, diabetics struggle with their condition, but hard work and dedication – including eating correctly and exercising – can help them beat the disease.

“America not that Beautiful” describes basic human behavior, noting that sometimes eating – a necessary fact of life – can become an addiction, especially the high-calorie types readily available in the United States at corner stores, gas stations and grocery stores. That addiction, when accompanied by a sedentary lifestyle and other risk factors, can lead to diabetes. Radon writes about her diagnosis with Type II diabetes and how she worked to fight the disease through modifying her diet and increasing her exercising. Her efforts paid off: Today she is 25 pounds lighter, her cholesterol is within normal limits and she is prediabetic rather than a diabetic.

Radon aims to provide inspiration and practical tips to fighting diabetes, sharing suggestions for daily activities and good habits, information on counting carbohydrates and tips for shopping for food. Diabetic-friendly recipes such as lima beans with sausage and deviled eggs made with avocado incorporate easy-to-find ingredients and good nutrition. The book closes with a chapter devoted to inspirational quotes from historic figures and some inspirational thoughts from the author.

Author Jadwiga Radon. who has diagnosed with diabetes in 2009, taught for 32 years before moving to the United States from Poland to be closer to her only child, a daughter. She is a retired teacher interested in psychology, history and politics. Radon, who moved to the United States in 2001 from Poland, enjoys the mountainous area of Idaho, where she lives. Roberto Guerrero Prompts People to Eliminate Mentally Crippling Aspects of Their Lives in New Book

coverGuerreo

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Mentally Crippled” by Roberto Guerrero.

People can take charge of their own lives and use their natural talents – and brains – to improve themselves and the world. That’s the assertion championed in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

It’s much easier to blame circumstances and others for what happens than to look internally to find the answers to problems. The author of this new book urges people to take a look at their own lives and vow to use the power of their mind to make changes – no matter how small – that will benefit them and the people in their lives.  Instead of mentally crippling themselves, letting others tell them how to think or letting stress overtake their emotions, they need to take responsibility to achieve their dreams and have a satisfying life.

“Mentally Crippled” urges readers to challenge themselves like never before, even if it means leaving behind friends who won’t change. Much of his advice is common sense, including the exhortation to combine common sense smarts with book smarts. Come to work on time and be prepared to do the job. Improve your mind by reading books and share that knowledge. Keep your word and your commitments. Be a good friend. “Dare to jump out of your skin and treat others kindly and respectfully,” the author writes. “I dare you to become a giver instead of a taker. I dare you to compliment others and be the first one to smile. … Once you have a different outlook toward life, the universe will return the favor.”

Author Roberto Guerrero was born in the Dominican Republic, the youngest of 10 children. His mother was from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He came to the United States in 1969 and graduated from Martin L. King Jr. High School in New York City. Guerrero has worked for the Veterans Administration, including the VA hospital in Gainesville, Fla., since retiring after 22 years of service in the Army. He and his wife, Pauline, married for more than 34 years, have three sons and six grandchildren.

Simple Suggestions Enhance Seniors’ Daily Lives, Thanks to New Book

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Live Well and Long: Simple Comforts for Senior Life” by Mary Walden.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Live Well and Long: Simple Comforts for Senior Life” by Mary Walden.

A woman who hopes to make a difference in her own mother’s life compiles suggestions for improving seniors’ lives, in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Life isn’t always about adventure and excitement. Sometimes, it’s the simple pleasures that make life enjoyable. Author Mary Walden’s new book contains a variety of simple activities and comforts that add zest to daily living for senior citizens. Although they are designed for seniors, their families and caregivers, the activities in this handy resource can be geared to people at all stages of life or health.

“Live Well and Long: Simple Comforts for Senior Life” offers suggestions for activities as well as how to plan and record them so seniors have something to look forward to each day.  One simple suggestion is to make sure seniors have access to a window, where they can watch the world go by from the comfort of a comfortable chair or bed, keeping connected to the world outside and viewing the world’s natural wonders.

The book includes activities that highlight nature, such as cut flowers, exploring or tending a garden (or even watching a garden tour DVD) and enjoying sunlight, even if it’s from the comfort of a patch of shade. Walden also touches on the emotional side of life, presenting activities based on family, having choices, being treated with respect and sharing laughter. Although not intended as medical advice, the book includes suggestions such as keeping fresh water handy, going for walks, and savoring a refreshing nap when necessary.

Author Mary Walden notes on her website that she developed this collection of practical activities and attitude outlooks to help her own mother as she aged. Above all, Walden hopes to guide seniors to enjoy life. As she writes in the book’s introduction, “Each new day is truly a gift from God, so celebrate life with simple comforts!”

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Using Mindfulness and Positive Focus to Ease Depression, Anxiety and Pain: A 30-Day Journal” by Marcia Hillary, PhD.

A psychologist trained in mindfulness techniques offers meditations and exercises in a compact 30-day journal newly released by Dog Ear Publishing.

It can be easy to develop a negative attitude, especially when depression, anxiety and physical pain play a role. This new journal is designed to help people develop a different approach to life, focusing on the positive aspects and coaching readers to reach inner peace. The author approaches life like a garden, comparing negative thoughts to weeds that must be pulled and positive thoughts to a crop that must be cultivated.

“Using Mindfulness and Positive Focus to Ease Depression, Anxiety and Pain: A 30-Day Journal” serves up advice and clear mindfulness-based exercises promoting a sanctuary of sorts from the painful experiences that can arise in everyday life. The author defines “mindfulness” as “paying attention to the present moment, without judging that moment as good or bad, painful or pain free, positive or negative,” adding that paying attention to the present moment “allows us to fully live in the present moment.”

The journal includes self-rating exercises to take stock of physiological, mental, emotional and spiritual states; meditation; body scans to really concentrate on parts of the body; awareness exercises; and positive statements. Easy-to-fill-in pages for each day of the journal provide reminders of the exercises, and a list of references offers further resources for those interested in changing their lives for the better.

Author Marcia Hillary, PhD, is a psychologist and coach trained in mindfulness techniques by master facilitators Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. Hillary also is trained and certified in guided imagery and clinical hypnosis and works with individuals, couples and groups. She belongs to the American Psychological Association, American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Institute of Noetic Sciences, among others.
