Experience A Medical Mission Into the Depths of South Sudan Through “Ajak’s Song”, A New Book by Kenneth Waxman

coverWaxman

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Ajak’s Song” by Kenneth Waxman.

In Kenneth Waxman’s new book, “Ajak’s Song”, released by Dog Ear Publishing, a prominent American surgeon describes his journey to a small tribal village in South Sudan with Doctors without Borders on the eve the country’s vote for independence. He uncovers many truths; about his own life journey, about the courageous people of South Sudan, and about the devastating crisis in health care that the world’s newest nation is suffering.

Today, Dr. Kenneth Waxman announces the publication of his first book, “Ajak’s Song”, the narrative of a surgeon from Santa Barbara who travels deep into the bush of sub-Saharan Africa to discover many truths about himself and about the courageous people of our world’s newest nation, South Sudan.

“Ajak’s Song” begins with the story of Ajak, a 13-year-old girl bitten by a snake, leading to disastrous consequences. Traditional healing methods don’t work, and Ajak faces amputation, which would destroy her dreams of getting married and bringing fortune to her family through her bride price. Carried in her father’s arms for two days, she finds hope at a new international health facility being established in a small Dinka village near the border of North Sudan. There, she meets Waxman, who would be her surgeon, performing multiple operations in attempt to save her leg.  Each time she awakes from her surgeries, Ajak opens her eyes and begins singing a song of hope.

Waxman shares his awe of the beauty of his surroundings, the magic of the tribal culture, and the very different and fascinating perspectives the villagers have about disease and death. He shares stories about his fellow volunteers, South Sudanese children facing death from tropical diseases, patients with violent spear and gunshot wounds, and a young Dinka man who serves as his assistant, in hopes of someday becoming a surgeon himself.  These stories provide a very personal glimpse into the heart of South Sudan, and some of the challenges the young country faces.

Photographs in “Ajak’s Song” illustrate in stark reality the medical challenges South Sudanese villagers face. Although South Sudan has now become an independent nation after decades of revolution, it is left with a terrible lack of health care, without providers or resources to fight the world’s highest rate of tropical diseases, shockingly high rates of maternal and infant deaths, and tragically untreated injuries.

As Waxman works at the clinic and gets to know its patients and helpers, the surgeon finds himself forever changed and hopeful about the country’s potential. He becomes determined to make a difference. As he writes, “I came to understand that despite the pain of the past and the trials of the present, there is an exciting future for South Sudan.”

Readers can also help change lives in South Sudan. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to Future Doctors for South Sudan (www.futuredoctors.org), a nonprofit organization that works to educate young South Sudanese doctors.

Author Kenneth Waxman, a board-certified surgeon, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his medical degree from the University of Chicago. He did surgical training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and then joined the UCLA faculty. He helped develop the first organized trauma system in the United States after joining the University of California, Irvine, where as Professor of Surgery, he directed the trauma center, surgical intensive care and burn units. He moved on to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he developed the first trauma center on California’s central coast and directed the hospital’s surgical training program. Waxman joined Doctors without Borders in 2010.

Psychiatrist Helps Veterans Tap Into New Treatments for PTSD; David Fohrman Releases New Book

coverFohrman

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Traumatic Stress Recovery: Helping Those Traumatized by Selfless Service” by David Fohrman.

An expert in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder shares information in layman’s terms about the disorder – and potential treatments — in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Although soldiers train and prepare for every mission to ensure their greatest chance for survival, there is no all-encompassing method to prepare for their minds for the effects of trauma. This new book, based on years of clinic and basic research, offers a roadmap to recovery for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and their helpers. The author, Dr. David Fohrman, created the stress resiliency program while serving as chief of mental health in the 1st Armored Division.

“Traumatic Stress Recovery: Helping Those Traumatized by Selfless Service” is divided into three sections covering PTSD, a debilitating disorder that can affect veterans and their families for years – and even decades – after they’ve left the service. The first section gives readers essential information about the psychological and biological causes of PTSD, as well as its connection to suicide. The second section describes a six-step, competency-based program veterans can use to decrease the impact of PTSD-type problems. The third section focuses on what communities can do to help veterans and others at risk of developing PTSD, including challenging assumptions on what it means to have the disorder, what it means to be “cured” and what it means to be “resilient.”

This valuable resource offers insights into PTSD and debunks popular myths, such as only weak-minded people can develop the disorder. In fact, the opposite is true. Strong, compassionate people who perform to the best of their abilities develop the disorder following a traumatic event precisely because they care so passionately about their own lives and that of their fellow soldiers. All hope is not lost for those who suffer from PTSD if they have a plan and help from professionals, family and friends. As the author writes, “even veterans with chronic PTSD symptoms can learn essential skills to help them recover their compassion for – and their capacity for trust and closeness with – themselves and others.” This book is just an overview of the types of exercises veterans can use to decrease both the severity and intensity of PTSD-type symptoms. A companion book, “Traumatic Stress Recovery: Workbook,” available through www.tsrexperts.com offers additional practical exercises.

Dr. David Fohrman, founder of Traumatic Stress Recovery, has more than 12 years of experience teaching resiliency techniques to military and civilian settings. The board-certified child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist has received numerous awards, including the Kosovo Campaign Ribbon, Alpha Omega Alpha and America’s Top Psychiatrists in 2006. He helped thousands ofactive duty, National Guard, veterans, and family members with his program since 2008.

Are we ready for Real Leadership? Richard Dillard Releases New Book

coverDillard

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Real Leadership! Are You Ready?” by Richard Dillard.

An award-winning performance solutions executive shares unusual insights about leadership – and how uncommon methods can significantly improve performance – in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

The only constant is change, and that’s certainly true in the business world with market globalization, rapid technology proliferation and the explosion of information. And few would question that the only variables that matter are leadership and operating culture when it comes to thriving in this type of environment. Yet in seeming opposition, real leadership remains elusive and the constructive organizational cultures they produce are few and far between. This new book by a seasoned professional with experience spanning forty-one positions in twenty-three organizations, twelve career fields and seven industries focuses on rethinking and reframing long-held notions of potential and performance, helping kindle the coals of personal transformation and strike the spark of organizational change that is truly remarkable.

“Real Leadership! Are You Ready?” distills knowledge gleaned by Richard Dillard, an expert in leadership development, performance and learning solutions, strategic planning, team building and problem solving, business process re-engineering and customer/vendor relationship management. The first part of the book is designed to simply elevate thinking by the introduction of ideas not normally associated with leadership, while the second part challenges readers to adopt a proven process for developing personal and organizational Leadership Platforms: the Leadership Enrichment LIFE-cycle (LEL-c).

Rather than offering “quick fixes” or instant solutions, Dillard cautions that working through the LEL-c with the help of this book will take commitment, time and hard work. But as he highlights, there is no alternative that “…automatically places you or your organization in a position to leverage your platform and produce remarkable results.”

Richard Dillard is a management consultant for SAIC and collaborates professionally with Human Synergistics International, AchieveGlobal®, Corpus Optima and Direct Measures International. Dillard is certified as a project management professional and has a black belt in Six-Sigma improvement methodology. A U.S. Marine Veteran and current Air Force Reservist, Dillard has both domestic and international experience with successful business turnarounds through organizational and workforce development solutions, earning high marks for his innovative best-shore program design, development and delivery. He and his wife, Stacey, have four daughters and one granddaughter. Dillard is also the author of “CultureIMPACT!™.”

Learn How to Live Life to the Fullest with Tips from Jason Hughes in New Book

coverHughes

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Manstein: The Inner Genius Within Us All” by Jason Hughes.

An author who faced an incredible challenge of survival during his teen years urges people to explore their potential for inner genius in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

When fate intervened in his life, author Jason Hughes was forced to forge a new path. A horrific car crash killed his best friend and left Hughes battered in body but profoundly affected by a near-death experience filled with love. In this new book, he shares his belief that everyone possesses an “inner genius” that guides his life and expresses that genius, whether it is physical, mental or spiritual. Hughes calls that concept “Manstein,” in honor of scientific and mathematical genius Albert Einstein and his ability to express himself perfectly during his lifetime.

“Manstein: The Inner Genius Within Us All” aims to show readers how to achieve their own peace, happiness and productivity through developing their inner genius and recognizing their connection to the world and the love that abounds there. Hughes implores people to let go of the fears in their lives and trust in spiritual truth and love. He does not say the process will be easy; indeed, all living things experience ups and downs. Accessing inner genius through relationships, careers, family, hobbies, physical experiences, art or music allows people to shape their journey through life. Tools to realize Manstein include meditation, living according to spiritual law, choosing to be a light in the world, living in the moment, being grateful and – above all – recognizing spiritual love. As Hughes writes in the introduction, “We all have been divinely created to simply be extraordinary and to live a unique life of extraordinary purpose and success in our individual lives.”

Author Jason Hughes was a young rising tennis tournament star growing up in Old Saybrook, Conn., until a car accident at age 16 left him with a traumatic brain injury and killed his best friend. Hughes spent time in a coma and given only a 20 percent chance of survival. Three years of physical therapy helped heal his body, and his near-death experience changed his life. Hughes attended Tyler (Texas) Junior College to become certified by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association to teach tennis. He has a bachelor’s degree in communications from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in holistic counseling from Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I. He teaches at the Beverly Hills Tennis Center and is a holistic health life coach.
