Dog Ear Publishing releases “Searching for the Norm: A Spiritual Odyssey” by Norman Smith.

A retired teacher and former pastor shares his journey of faith in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Growing up as the son of hard-working, dirt-poor Okie migrant workers in the era of the Depression, the Dust Bowl and World War II left its mark on author Norman Smith, as did settling into Modesto with his family and being introduced to fundamentalism. In this new book, Smith narrates his pilgrimage searching for the normative live of a Christian and detailing the reasons for the paths he took along the way.

“Searching for the Norm: A Spiritual Odyssey” shares details about Smith’s parents. His mother’s mother was a full-blooded Cherokee or Choctaw Indian, and his father spent time with a Cherokee family while healing from a broken hip. They met after they became Christians through the Holiness movement. Smith pulls no punches in describing the hardship of his early days, when the family barely survived, and moving out at age 17, but he shares with equal detail happier times living in Modesto and the joy of a public library. As his professional and personal lives settle down, Smith has time to ponder bigger questions in life, like his faith.

As he points out, following Jesus “is a deceptively easy-sounding command, until we eventually realize he was going to the cross. He bids us do the same. How we do so is a treatise all in itself.” Smith learns to see Christianity and God’s love in daily life, both in the classroom and working with carpenters. When Smith retires, he gains an unexpected chance to serves as interim senior pastor of his church, Bethel Christian Church, and later as its pastor. Those years of service bring new insights into his ever-expanding experiences with fellow Christians. Smith’s opportunity for ministry doesn’t end when he leaves Bethel, and ultimately he discovers a faith that aligns with his deeply ingrained Protestant roots and his new understanding of Christianity.

Author Norman Smith is a confessed reader, enjoying just about anything. He worked as a union carpenter, was a high school teacher (mainly American and English literature) for more than 30 years and became a full-time minister. He and his wife, Ruth, enjoy traveling.

Retired Pastor Shares Words of Wisdom, Musings; Book by Norman Smith

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Out of the Norm: Musings of a Pastor” by Norman Smith.

The author shares his thoughts on subjects ranging from God’s promises to work, writing in a conversational style. This new release from Dog Ear Publishing has its origin in filler writing for a weekly church bulletin of a San Francisco church where the author served first as interim—then permanent—pastor for over a decade. The book is the best of his weekly musings.

When he first started writing short fillers for the weekly bulletin of Bethel Christian Church in San Francisco, pastor Norman Smith never dreamed they would have any longevity. He simply saw them as another chance to connect with members of his congregation. Now retired, he shares some of these “mental meanderings” in this new book, compiling and polishing the best of these gems. Smith views his writing as a continuing form of ministry – telling the truth through everyday actions. “Work, recreation, ministry, serving, laughing, call them what you will, if done honestly, all become worship,” he writes.

“Out of the Norm: Musings of a Pastor” has a free -flowing life of its own, as sacred moments pair up with the downright trivial. An entry on prayer may follow one on paper clips.  Absurdities are up for examination.  For instance, in “Sound Healing,” one of the first entries, the author admits he missed celebrating World Sound Healing Day and wryly asks his readers if they have done their part to add to the healing sounds of the universe. The next entry, “The Rose Bush,” focuses on the spiritual implications of the author’s battle with a gopher over a rose bush. The cornered gopher’s seeming repentance for his deeds leads a puzzled Smith to finally deliver him to safety – putting him on the other side of the fence – instead of meting out deserved judgment.

The author writes in a conversational style, whether telling a homespun story about Christian youth camps, or noting the absurdities of spell-check, or offering more serious reflections on forgiveness and God’s promises. He mingles humor and guile in easy prose that both entertains and provokes thought. Smith worked as carpenter for ten years, then spent the next 32 years as a high school teacher before becoming a pastor, and here brings a new perspective to the mundane and the profound that will last long after the book is finished.
