Dog Ear Publishing releases “Play Day with Daddy” by Cheryl Kula.

A young girl and her father enjoy spending time together when her mother goes to work in this new book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

When a young girl’s mother leaves for work Friday, it’s not cause for sadness because that’s the day the girl and her dad get to spend together. This new children’s book tells what happens during their day, from start to finish. The story ends at the best part of the day – when Mommy comes home and all three sit down at the dinner table to talk about what happened while they were apart.

“Play Day with Daddy” features typical activities for families: a pancake breakfast, foraging in the garden for fruits and vegetables, having a picnic lunch and reading stories about dragons and knights. It’s a fun way for the girl and her father to spend the day, as well as their cat, who insists on tagging along. Colorful cartoon illustrations by Karl Trolenberg fit perfectly with Cheryl Kula’s gentle rhyming story. The book’s easy prose works equally well as a read-aloud story or one children can tackle themselves.

This is the first children’s book for author Cheryl Kula, who has two daughters with her husband, Ted. They live in a mountainous area of West Virginia. Illustrator Karl Trolenberg, a graduate of the East Carolina School of Art, has worked in the arts for 17 years. He and his wife, Kathryn, have two sons. They live in Virginia.

Dog Ear Publishing releases “Spirit Quest” by Katie Cruickshank.

Three brothers go on a quest to help their land avoid civil war in this new young adult book released by Dog Ear Publishing.

Three brothers find themselves orphaned after their parents die and decide to travel across the country to find legendary Great Spirits who can help save their world from civil war. This imaginative debut novel by a teen author features adventure and heroism in a savage land, narrated by Wilder and featuring Shadow and Demon, his older brothers. A charming captor lures Wilder away from his family, but eventually he learns his true destiny.

“Spirit Quest” delves into a world surrounded by a Sea of Tears, Deep Forest and Spirit Mountains, divided into a Wolf Realm by the mountains – where the brothers dwell – and the Human Realm by the sea. As Wilder matures from a cub to a wolf, he encounters a bear, a dragon and a devious snake and must look into his heart to discover the truth. He and his brothers have some allies for the journey: two flower fairies and their pet, as well as some friends they make along the way. They also receive guidance from the ghosts of their parents and an ancient ballad. Magic spells, incredible transformations and epic battles will reveal the fate of those who live in this wild kingdom.

This is the first novel for author Katie Cruickshank, who is 13 years old. The book began as a short story in a notebook at a young friend’s birthday party. Cruickshank lives with her parents, four older brothers and dog Dakota.
