In his new book, author Stephen Chapin Kinnaman details the life and times of this extraordinary Civil War figure, best known as a secret agent of the Confederate States Navy in Europe. It was James Dunwoody Bulloch who got to sea the most deadly raider of all time, the C.S.S. Alabama. His family connections, however, were equally impressive; Bulloch’s nephew was Theodore Roosevelt, the country’s 26th president.
Before writing “Captain Bulloch: The Life of James Dunwoody Bulloch, Naval Agent of the Confederacy,” Kinnaman followed in the footsteps of Bulloch, visiting places such as Savannah and Roswell, Georgia; New York City; Liverpool, England; Cherbourg, France; and the island of Terceira in the Azores, all to better understand Bulloch’s life. Kinnaman’s travels lend a clear note of authenticity to his latest work. Bulloch’s antebellum career featured service as an officer in the U.S. Navy and as a captain of mail steamers, honing skills he later employed in the service of the Confederacy. When the Civil War began, Bulloch made the life-altering decision to ‘go South.’ His family was one of many split by this most terrible conflict; after the war they were forced to begin their lives anew in England.
